The fortress consists of two walled sections on this steep hill between the sulphur baths and the botanical gardens of Tbilisi. On reaching the top of Narikala hill by cable car costing 4.5 GEL one-way the view was absolutely scenic on a cloudy morning. From the cable car exit it is a short downhill descent to Narikala Fortress.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten September 30, 2023
- DrRahulModiGorakhpur, India116 contributionsView of the cityThe easiest way is to take the cable car to the top. The steps were too slippery as it was raining. When we reached the top, it was drizzling, the view of the city looked cool from the top. There are souvenir shops and cafes at the top. Place to visit to the city viewVisited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten January 16, 2024
- Cloud1,214 contributionsDefinitely worth due to the gorgeous view over the cityThis is a place you can access via the aerial tramway, nor far from Europe Square. From here you will enjoy the lovely view over the whole city, can see the Mother of Georgia from the bottom and even buy some souvenirs. Make sure to go on a clear sky day to make the most out of it!Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten May 12, 2024

Stop by for some lovely pictures by the fortress. From the top you can actually get some 360 view of the old city and around. Please do check the pictures.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten June 6, 2024
- Soudamini MohapatraBengaluru, India1,438 contributionsFortress with great viewsNarikala fortress is the oldest landmark of Tbilisi. Originally it was built in the 4th century, whereas most of walls were built in 8th century. Could not visit inside the fortress, but only saw it from outside. It can be accessed with a short cable car ride. The view from the fortress is quite nice, the whole of Tbilisi city is visible from the fortress.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 9, 2024
- Milind ShahAhmedabad, India2,016 contributionsNice place to spend eveningOne of the oldest landmarks of Tbilisi, the fortress is a great piece of history. The Fortress can be accessed either via a short cable car ride, or a hike. The cable car charges 5 Laari for a two-way transfer. You also need the Tbilisi metro money card for once to load money. Once you reach the top, the views are quite nice, as the whole of Tbilisi city is visible from the fortress. You can also walk to the mother of Georgia Statue at the top. There is also a botanical garden at the top. Once you reach the top, there are a few small cafes and shops where you can have some coffee and drinks overlooking Tbilisi. It is recommended to visit the fortress in the evening and watch sunset from the top as the city turns red and pink in the evening.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten June 10, 2024
- Mr FoodieGreater London, United Kingdom38 contributionsa very pleasant City VisitA very enjoyable city with great restaurants, museums and art galleries. We stayed in the Old Town at the Amante Hotel - asked for a room on the 3rd or 4th Floor for a fabulous view across the city. We took advantage of the Turkish Baths which are highly recommended, caught the tube which is an experience, visited the Botanical garden, and took the cable car to the fort and seperatly to the theme park overlooking the city. The highlight of the visit were supper in the Funicular Restaurant on MT Mtatsmida, the Exhibitions at the National Museum and the breathtaking art in the Georgian Museum of Fine Art which "should not be missed"Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten July 8, 2024
- beetcanner732 contributionsGet Thee to Narikala FortressBring your camera for the endless views on a clear, warm day. You can't leave Tbilisi without this experience. The way the fortress looms over Old Town was strategic to find off invaders. This was one of the most heavily fortified and impregnable fortresses in the heyday of the Silk Road. The were not messing around.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 25, 2024

Narikala Fortress is a small old fortress, there is nothing much to see up there, most of the walls still standing, and there is a small church inside the walls which was rebuilt.
You can see the Fortress clearly from a lot of places in Tbilisi, especially when it is lit at night it looks so beautiful, but if you go up there is nothing much to see, still going up there is recommended but not to actually see the fortress but to have a great view of the beautiful Tbilisi from above.
I recommend going up the hill using the cable car, visit the mother of Georgia & the Narikala Fortress, then go down from the other side through the lovely National Botanical Garden of Tbilisi city, You can also go down using the zipline in the Botanical Garden.

Take the cable car from Rike park (other side of the river), it's only 2 GEL + the metro card.
From there you'll already have a great view, and upon arrival just walk towards the fortress.
Inside there's not that much to see besides the church, however you can climb the walls all the way to the top for some great views of the city.
Afterwards you can either head down to the city, or go back up (pass some stalls) to go see Mother of Georgia or the Botanical Garden.

This little fortress is originally a Persian (Sassanian) fortress, but later modified by the arabs, mongols, and others. Built on the hill overlooking the river Mtkvari and the prestigious sulfur baths. The name is a derivation of the mongol name which means little fortress. The fortress shows nothing special but still it gives marvelous views over the city and it also compromises a small chapel, St. Nicholas, which was rebuilt recently after the independence replacing the old one destroyed in a fire.

Nice place to visit in the evening especially in summer as it could be very hot during the day. If you choose to take the cable car up and down you might need an hour to an hour and a half to walk one direction to see mother of Georgia and may be have a cup of coffee ,then walk the other way to the fortress (good walk) and enjoy the beautiful views from the top. If you want to visit the Botanic Garden you have to allocate additional time.

Take the cable car up to enjoy all the views! Once on top you can walk all around the fortress and there are various viewing platforms as well. You can get up close to the Mother Georgia statue. There are vendors selling souvenirs, drinks, and snacks. There is a zip line, but I didn't try it! If you walk down in to the botanic gardens be aware you have to walk back up if you have a return ticket for the cable car!

It’s easy to get to (either by the cable car or waking) and there is a good bit to walk around and explore. Also you’re up on the hill outside the city with great views over it all. Definitely get some fresh pomegranate juice from the guy near the entrance, it was great!

Lovely views from the first level itself. You can climb up at a slow pace in 10-12 minutes. It’s a little steep but there are steps and a railing. Of course I was a little too tired to trek up even higher to the next level. The views from there itself were lovely. We had climbed up as the cable car was stopped for sometime due to the windy weather. Of course if the cable car is working, you can use it to come up and then walk down. My sons of course had the energy to clamber up to the next level as well.

The Narikala is an ancient fortress overlooking Tbilisi, and the Mtkvari (Vari) River. The fortress consists of two walled sections on a steep hill between the sulfur baths and the botanical gardens of Tbilisi. The fortress can be reached from a tramway or road. Aside from walking the fortress walls, other things to do on Narikala Hill include visiting the Mother of Georgia statue. The views of the city from top of the hill are spectacular.

What is the best or the most ideal time to visit the fortress using the funicular?
Written April 2, 2017
Funicular and the Narikala fortress cable car are two different things. We went mid day and it was awesome. Sun was out and you can get a good view of the city. The funicular goes up to a restaurant and amusement park, it was also beautiful up there and the restaurant was good.

Written January 26, 2017
Hello there,
you can book directly from your hotel when you arrive to Tbilisi, it is very easy. Or, I can give you contact details of my tour guide, if you want. Her name is Nini, she was great. I spent 3 days there with her.

Do you have to pay to the fort?
Written May 31, 2016
You can take steps. It's totally free, but its good to take the aerial cable car to get there with just 1 gel. The cable car is taken from rike park, you can buy a 2 way ticket (up and down for 2 gel).
We took a cable car to go up and used steps to get back down. I guess it's best combination to get to see the best out of the city from the cable car and the fortress on foot

Year round weather in Tbilisi.
Written October 7, 2015
Best months to me are March-April (everything blooming), June (mild summer, can be over 30 C sometimes, though) and September - mild and full of seasonal fruits, and also full of colors if you go to the mountains.
If you are from Dubai I wouldn`t really advice going there during winter months, will be cold for you. It is rarely snowing but can be around +5 to - 5 and dank, so not really pleasant to walk around and enjoy nature and sightseeings.
