Neighbourhood: Myeongdong / Namdaemun
Arguably Seoul’s most famous neighbourhood and undoubtedly one of its most popular, Myeongdong takes shopping and eating to new heights, with hundreds of shops, restaurants, and cafes all stacked on top of one another. The rise in popularity of Korean cosmetics, fashion, and more has made this area a must-see for visitors who come and marvel at Myeongdong’s often frenetic pace and energy. Lotte and Shinsaegae’s massive department stores are also popular draws for both Korean and luxury products. The department stores, just like Myeongdong’s streets, are crowded around the clock. Myeongdong’s many street food carts are also immensely popular for their inexpensive and quirky offerings (French-fry-encrusted corn dogs, anyone?). The neighbourhood’s popularity, as well as its close proximity to other popular sights and neighbourhoods, makes it one of Seoul’s most popular places to stay.

Shinsegae is Seoul's answer to Harrods or Macy's. Its Myeongdong store is a de facto landmark in downtown. This is also the place to find international luxury brands. An underground passage connects it with the metro station.

Generic, sad department store. It is dated, as in many department stores nowadays with the advent of online shoppong, but if you are pressed for time, looking for specific items from several big name brands and it’s near your hotel then it’s convenient to go. If not, skip it. Or must you really visit a department store, just go to Lotte several blocks away. It is more bustling, feels newer and more brands to choose from.

If you are after designer brand shopping well this is the place to go. Big and impersonal and like so many other similar stores around the world. I prefer the character of the local markets.

As a tourist I want to buy NARS powder and foundation. Poor service of NARS seller in Shinsegae Myeongdong Namdaemun first floor was inpolite and non professional to a tourist. She immedialely said that the powder I need was SOLD OUT, seemed do not reapect and embarrassing. This sales girl really not suitable for serving buyer, especially tourist in a Shinsegae mall that is saud to be big ans famous.

For luxury shopping, this place did the worst in customer service for tourists. Twice I shopped there and tried to make a tax refund, the service desk personnel seemed bossy and arrogant. Instead of being helpful and friendly, I was questioned (like a school kid by a fierce teacher) if I know how to do tax refund at the airport. Am I supposed to keep that in my database?? Turns out that advice she used red thick pencil to highlight on my tax refund envelope was totally unnecessary because it was done on the credit card. I did it again before the customs and after the customs. Totally not needed I was told by the on-site staff. On the other hand, at Lotte, the process was so much more dignified and comfortable. If I must, I would shop at Lotte.

Our "favorite" departmental store in Korea. Always try to visit their stores in different cities whenever time permit. Excellent ambience, big & very classy, lots of great products. But very upscale, very expensive . Great for browsing especially the supermarket. But not for buying.

Reminded me of Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC. Had an 'American' feel. Upmarket department store. Well laid out and very clean. Staff are pleasant and friendly. Nice to browse. The food court and supermarket were good as they stocked a small range of international products as well which is great for expats. Not too cheap.

Whenever I visit Seoul, this is where I go for foods, clothes, duty-free, etc. They have the best items of all sorts and fun to browse here too.

During the festive period Shinsegae in Myeongdong is quite popular as they have extensive Christmas lighting all around the building, which looks quite pretty. There are two buildings, one more focused on high end brands and the other more focused on main stream brands. This department store is always busy because besides it's good selection and duty free area it is also nearby the heart of Myeongdong with all its shops and street food. So it is within easy walking distance and a good starting point to explore the area. It is also easy to reach with public transport.
Within the department store there is a great food area in the basement as well as a restaurant floor with 5-6 restaurants, mainly Korean, whereas in the basement it is all kinds of foods.
There are a couple of Shinsegae department stores in Seoul, this one and the one next to the Express Bus Terminal are the better ones.

Huge store with everything high end you need. Close to the markets and other big shops. We went yesterday it was packed. I thought the staff were quite rude when I asked for a specific product and the information desk was really unhelpful as the guy did not speak one word of English.
