The Citadel is also known as the Citadel of Salah al-Din. It’s the largest Citadel in the Islamic world and it’s a huge complex. The most significant building in the Citadel is the Mohamed Ali Mosque which is also known as the Alabaster Mosque. There are other smaller mosques and several museums in the complex. There is also quite a... More

The citadel is a very old section of the city of Cairo. It is a fortified complex that serves as a museum of Islamic architecture. The Alabaster Mosque is a must see.

This is simply another neglected treasure in Cairo. The place is a gem in the heart of Islamic Cairo, but is very unorganized and severely humiliated. The bathrooms are terrible and nonhuman.

The Citadel is worth visiting to see the views of Cairo and also the grounds are beautiful to walk through. It is also where the mosque is.

My husband and I visited Cairo Egypt in January 2017. We visited the citadel and Muhammad Ali mosque during our visit with an English-speaking guide and transportation. It is truly beautiful and a must see attraction for art lovers, history lover and those who wish to see the beauty of Islam.

The view from the Citadel is usually obscured by haze or smog so it does not provide the panorama I hoped for. The Mosque is historic but not in good repair. If you have a busy schedule and you're looking to pare down your to-do list, skip it.

Great terrace with view of the pyramids when we visited. Centre piece is the Mosque of Mohammed Ali (no not him). Beautiful inside and the overall citadel area is very peaceful.
