It looks that there is a master plan for Beijing. What a relief!
It seems that they want to have until 2020 a green capital, eco-friendly and so on.
But anyway, if you like city maps, this is the place for you. At 3rd floor a huge Beijing lies at your feet! It is impressive. I spent a lot o time taking photos, searching for particular building.. At 4th floor there is a binocular and it will show you not only the magnified building, but their names, and some extra information about them.
Additionally, 3d and 4d movies show you a little bit about history. I went to a 3d show, but it was not 3d. Just a very wide regular movie
Like someone else said here, you better visit it in the end of your vacation. It will be nice to recognize the building you already visited.

We have lived in Beijing for 8 years now and I like to take visitors here on their first day (especially as it's within walking distance to Tian An Men and Qianmen old street.
Downstairs on the first floor, there's a bronze 'bowl' showing Beijing and the mountains surrounding the city. There's also a large bronze on the wall of what Beijing looked like in 1949 and then a to scale model of what Beijing looks like today. You can be right there on the 2nd floor, but get a better view from the 3rd floor. My kids like to see where they have lived, where their school is and what places they have been to visit in Beijing.
There's also a good (and short - 20 minute) wide screen movie on the history of Beijing (10 RMB) plus a 4D movie (also 10 RMB) which was more propaganda and future plans for Beijing.
The other exhibits vary and have been very good (folk customs, marriage, community in the old village) to mediocre (water conservation).
Also important in Beijing - they had clean toilets! So definitely worth a visit for the 40 RMB admission fee.

We had a very good time in the museum. It is a very interesting place to discover the evolution of Beijing. The 1st floor is great with good translation in English, then more difficult on the 2nd floor. But do not stop there, the 3rd floor will give you the helicopter view over Beijing (amazing). Look at the size of the Hutong!.
Quick tips, do not forget an ID / passport. Entrance was free.
You might also consider (for once) to stop at the shop of the museum (good place to find souvenirs)

We decided to go here because even though very few people have reviewed on the Trip Adviser site, everyone who went seemed to think it was fantastic so that convinced us to go. It is on the south east corner of Tian'anmen Square so if in the square pop in here for 90minutes. You wont regret it.
It's fascinating even though we had no interest in urban planning... wish we had one of these museums in London as i would take everyone there! Fantastic model and for some reason curiously fascinating and addictive to see where you are going or have been. Also the feng shui aspect of the whole of Beijing is laid bare - who knew the Olympics site was on the same line as the Temple of Heaven and Forbidden City (why you would want to know this is debatable but it is weirdly fascinating!
Lots of models and all are works of art really. Cross between sculpture and science i suppose.
The shop is great - wish we'd bought more souvenirs there as really cheap and nice quality. If i am in Beijing again, i'd go again in the same way you go to the Science Museum in London more than once... why? Goodness knows but its a really great place - the best museum we went to in China and we loved it way more than e.g. the Art District. Just go there if you are in Tian'anmen Square - walk to the south side away from the Forbidden CIty and look at the old Gate, go to the PLanning Museum on the corner and then spend an hour in Dashilar. That is a great 1/2 day....
Cant imagine anyone not liking it. Kids loved it - just tell them to find something like the Olympics and its like a jigsaw to them..

Informative place but pretty boring.
Our guide spent so much time explaining in details every aspects of this exhibition that most of us were bored after 2 hours. And we were still not finished.
Our group were made up of few kids, elderly people & teenagers and adults, who did not enjoy the visit.
We had to tell her to cut short this visit & gives us more time for shopping.

On days when the Beijing smog gets too overwhelming but you still want to get a good look at the city, you can literally do so at the Beijing Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. It’s not Smithsonian-quality by any means, but the place is big, clean, centrally located (right off of Tiananmen Square), and relatively cheap at only RMB 40. Fourth floor has a huge scale model of the entire metropolis, and the other floors contain exhibits about the city which are interesting enough to keep you entertained for at least a good hour or two. If you have young kids, it’s a great spot for them to run around and burn off some pent-off energy while pretending they’re Godzilla. Definitely a worthwhile visit if you have a few extra days in this city.

I haven't heard people talking about this place, I just stumbled on it, and I'm glad I did! It is very interesting, you get a chance to learn about evolution of Beijing, and those models are amazing! Plus, it is free if you have a passport (or at least a photo of your passport, that's how I got in for free)! This place deserves more popularity.

Very few people, let alone few Westerners visit. Enormous map of Beijing is the highlight, but the exhibits on the building industry are very informative. Museum is free.
