About
Simatai, a section of the Great Wall of China located in the north of Miyun County, 120 km northeast of Beijing, holds the access to Gubeikou, a strategic pass in the eastern part of the Great Wall. It's one of the most untouched section of the Great Wall which will surely become the highlight of your trip to China!

Absolutely a beautiful part of the Great Wall both day and night! It is the one part of the wall you can visit at night. I recommend both! One of my favorite spots in the World!

Highly recommended to stay in the town (GuBei) for at least one night. You can hike the great wall during the day and then tour the rebuilt town at night. The great wall section is lit at night.

A super hiking experience on remnants of the Great Wall of China. This is one of the greatest wonders of the world. Truly an awesome experience.

Having been to Badaling and Mutianyu sections of the Great Wall, I was therefore looking forward to visit the Simatai section. The added bonus is that there is the option to visit in the evening.
To get to the cable car station for this attraction, we opted to go through Gubei Water Town (see my other review).
I was not disappointed. The night view of the water town from the Wall is spectacular. Only a small section is open for visit in the evenings but still it was worth it as the lights are very nice.

I and some Oz friends camped out here in October '95 (disregard the stupid required dropdown that only goes back to March 2019). Very, very rustic back then with no tourist crap yer. We rode on the local mini-bus from Beijing with the Chinese locals, which took about 4 hours one way. There were no tourist buses going there at that time.
The locals still mined the wall for the bricks to build their homes and wall was just sand piles in places.
We built a fire in one of the guard houses and slept there. During the night we got hit with a cold front and it rained. I was froze. But a great time all in all!

This short section (three towers) is only open in the evening. Access from Gubei Water Town and the Cable car opens at 5pm. In the autumn of October the sun has just set by this time and the wall has been lighted up by staff in advance.
Not much walking involved it is mostly the atmosphere of being there. Maybe you could pack some nibbles and a little drink and lay back and enjoy it.
Okay, it is a slightly novelty Great-Wall experience but it does add to teh overall experience. We stayed overnight in Gubei but you could extend it by a day and enjoy the town more.

We liked the freedom this gave us to plan a trip that suits our needs. Local bus routes are cheaper, but also takes precious time out of your day. We paid 48 Yuan one way for a tourist bus direct to Gubeikou (Water Town). The bus schedule is set for day trips from Beijing and this allows you time to walk Simatai Great Wall, explore Water Town and if you stay until the last bus back at 9pm you can also see views of the wall lit at night. Water Town is a replica of Wuzhen Water Town in Southern China.
I used Trip.Com app on iPad and phone to book combined tickets for entrance to Water Town and 2-Way Cable Car and entrance to Simatai Great Wall. WeChat is also an app to download and I paid for a short-term Chinese SIM to make sure I had data to access WeChat at any time. This was essential to arrange transport . Trip.com has details in English, you can show the QR code on your phone and overcome a lack of Mandarin. The tickets are only for the day booked. Other posts talk about need to buy in advance, but we could have just bought on arrival in November.
By car park where bus stops is a building to drop off any luggage for free and clean toilets to use. If organising pick up for accommodation outside Water Town, please note you may need to walk a little way up the road to meet them (I think this was to avoid paying entrance fee for the car). We waited by the luggage storage and they then helped us back up to the car.

Visited on a weekday morning and there was no more than 5 other people on with us. Took the cable car (recommended) up to Tower 5 before exploring the remaining 9 Towers. If you don’t have young kids, you don’t really need the return cable car ticket as it’s a manageable walk back to start of trail
Some sections have merely centimetres of wall left at the sides so it’s strongly encouraged to keep close watch on young ones

I'm going to be in China with National Geographic. They want to arrange a private trip for me to the Simatai zipline, but need to know where it is to tell their staff where to take me.
Can you help?

As far as I am aware the zipline no longer operates, I could be wrong, however, when I was there in May 2019 it looked as if it was all closed. The zipline is accessed from the walkway leading from the pay kiosk. That is if you choose not to take the cable car you would have to walk to the wall, close to the top is the zipline, on the left and it is suspended across the gorge to the other side of the river that feeds into/out off Gubei Water Town. You will need to go through Gubei Water Town to get to the pay kiosk. As stated, I think it is closed as I saw no activity on the other side of the gorge, there is buildings and parking areas but nobody was there.

A friend of mine did a tour of Simatai and said he went on a ZIPLINE to the bottom, this was years ago now. I am travelling in OCT and I can't seem to find anything online, does anyone know if this is still available? Thank you!

Hi, I did ask about it but was told that it has been discontinued. Similarly, hiking between Simatai and Jinshanling is no longer possible. However, I strongly propose to visit the GW @ Simatai as it is the only section that is lit in the evening. Wall visit must be scheduled for the evening.

Hi! Am visiting Simatai from Gubei via a cable car this Sep with my elderly mom. Am wondering if it’s possible to avoid any walk once we reach the top via the cable car? Just wanted to check out in case my mom is not able to walk much then, especially the tour we are keen on is a night tour

We visited Simatai in April. We are older persons, me having a bad knee so balance is vital & one of my other friends has alot of physical restrictions. We did not think that we would go further than the cable car but found it easy to walk to the lookout, it is flat as other post has stated. Once you get off the cable car you and your mom can gauge it from there as we did & very happy with ourselves. We took good head lamps & with all the other people who had torches, etc the path was good to walk back down in the dark. Also other people doing the walk were so considerate of our slowness & didn't push us along. Hope this help

HI Anthony. I'm really keen to visit Simatai (especially at night) and Gubei Water Town. We're staying in Beijing, and wondering if it's easy for us (a family of 2 adults and 2 children) to get to these sights on our via public transportation in the morning and then back at night.
Would it be worth visiting both the Simatai and Mutianyu parts of the Great wall?
Thanks, Maryanne

I agree with Vishal280's response. I don't know if you can get there by public transportation from Beijing. I had a car, and if I remember correctly, it was about 2 hours on divided highway. The hardest part was getting out of Beijing.

We only have 23hours in Beijing arriving 2pm. We are thinking of going straight from London overnight economy flight to the night Simatai tour of the wall by private taxi trip then hotel in Beijing quick look at forbidden city in the morning before a 2pm flight out. 2 adults 2 children 15&11. Do you think we can get to the wall ok and is it worth it at night

I would skip the Forbidden City and go to the Temple of Heaven or the Lamasery instead. The Lamasery has the advantage of being by one if Beijing's most interesting Hutongs, where you can have a bite to eat and peek into the shops along the street. The Forbidden City was a huge disappointment. It's crowded, and honestly not that much to see. The lamasery has an 80 meter tall Buddha and lots of really interesting temples to explore, and the Temple Of Heaven feels more personal and has more to fascinate you than Forbidden City. I am not sure about the Simitai section of the Great Wall, but you wouldn't want to see any of the Great Wall at night- you really need to see all around, the views of the mountains and the way the Wall snakes over them off into the impossible distances, to get the sense of perspective. I did the Jinshanling section. We did not take a cab but hired a car for the day through our hotel with a guide- it's very cheap. But if all you hve is the option of the night time tour- do it. When will you get the chance again? From Beijing, its about an hour and a half drive to the Great Wall. so hopefully you can be there before sunset. I wish you had more time there; we loved Beijing. But we were totally disappointed by the Forbidden City and got out of there as soon as we could.

Hi, it was possible to do this journey when we were there in March.. thanks
Hi, How long does it take a person to walk up to the first tower, continue all the way to the 10th and then walk back down?
I am a moderately fit person and a frequent hiker.
Also I would like to continue my hike to Jinshaling from Simatai. Can you tell me how far that is, or how long that will take?
Thank you so much.

I don't know how long it is and how long time ☺️ we hiked as far as we could, turned around and hiked back to our starting point. We spend about 7 hours hiking in total. Hiking from the road to the wall takes about 30 minutes in itself

Hello everybody, I would like to hike from Jinshaling to Simatai. Then from Simatai go to Chengde. Do you know if from Simatai there are any means of transportation to Chengde?
Thank you,

Not at present. I wanted to watch the sunset but I just missed it as they closed just before sunset. You are allowed entrance for around 2-3 hours, They have time slotted entrances. They shut around 4.30/5pm.
