The spiel in very convincing. Makes sense that at a factory you would get genuine products however it is simply not the case. Two of us bought silk underwear that laddered the first mie it was worn. I bought two scarves which were already packaged - should have opened the packing and felt the product and compared it to the one on display. Definitely synthetic. So much static that they crackled and stuck to themselves when removed from the plastic. Also failed the burn test - when a natural fibre is burnt it doesn't have a burnt plastic smell and should produce ash rather than forming a hard bead.

We enjoyed our visit as we learnt a lot about the way Silk is made into bedding & material.
We purchased a Queen sized silk filled quilt which we have loved for the past 4 years (we visited in February 2012).
In fact, we will never used a wool or polyester filled quilt again.
The silk quilt is the perfect temperature year round for two very different people, & it's lightweight.
We regularly popped it over the clothes line for Sun & Air, however, as it was not box stitched, eventually the silk stretched out to each side & was very light across the majority of the area. We are not comfortable trying to pull the silk out to 'stretch it back' & re-distribute it around the quilt.
For this reason, we have just purchased a box stitched, 200gm quilt from a distributor of Silk quilts in Australia.
A great product... But it really needs to be box stitched.
Highly recommend the factory/shop visit if you are interested in learning more, & if you wish to purchase silk, just be sure to check your prices back home first.

A tour guide gave a brief tour on how silk is made and then led us into the store. It is a silk store, not a museum!
Anyhow, my sister-in-law purchased king size silk sheets which would have cost her more than double if she was to have purchased them in Canada. We purchased a king size silk duvet for a real good price.
You can be assured that the items are 100% silk which you are unable to confirm at other shops in the city or markets.

This place is very interesting and official.
Surely it's more expensive than other places, but I'll get REAL SILK.
And also you can learn the whole process of silk making!
You will only be able to bargaing a little, not as much as everywhere else in Beijing

They have shown us silk blankets which we bought. We got a set "new" wrapped in transparent foil. Back home we found out that the blankets were made of polyester. The label in Chinese indeed stated so. A decade old trick that aparently is still used by this "museum" to ripp-off tourists.

I don't consider this a museum but is still an interesting place to learn how silk is made. A guide escorted us to several displays of the silk making process and explained each step. We were allowed to touch the cocoons and feel the silk thread. They specialize in making silk comforters so they showed us the process of making one. Then we were led to a showroom of comforters and silk covers for sale and then to a room with a vast selection of silk clothing for sale. This is silk business and not a museum. A real silk museum is in Suzhou and definitely worth a visit if you are in that part of China.

We wanted to go to the famous (or notorious) Silk Market or Silk Street, but our half day-service driver brought us here instead saying that he wouldn't want us to have bad experience of Beijing shopping in the Silk Street/Market. So as we came to this building, we found out that this is sort of probably official "factory" and "shop" and "museum" for silk. We were welcomed by a nice English speaking lady who entertained us with how they process silk from the beginning. Even it was kind of educational, at the end of the explanation, we were shown a display of finished products from blankets to bed sheets and also clothing and scarfs. The prices of the goods were amazingly expensive. Even then I got myself a thin silk blanket (without the sheets) queen sized for RMB 600. It probably was expensive, but it is still worth it, coz we could be sure it was real silk. Moreover, I kind of felt that it was a courtesy to our driver that the tourist that he brought bought something in that store. (I caught them exchanged signals as to inform that the tourist he brought did buy something there... ;-) ). But I wouldn't buy anything else there and I recommend that you won't either because we could get similar items in other markets (My friends and I got a more or less similar bed sheets for half of the price at Sanlitun Mall and Pearl Market the next day).
Nonetheless, all in all the trip was ok and quite educational.

We were brought here by our tour guide and wasted 5 hours listening to their big mouths. They wouldn't let us leave until everybody bought some silk. They slowly closed the doors as everyone was occupied and this gave me a bad feeling. The tour group after us said that they were completely locked in after everyone refused to buy anything! The ladies were too persistent and became rather annoying. DON'T GO ON CHINESE TOUR GROUPS. BUY NOTHING FROM HERE!

Firstly, I don't believe that most of the other reviews are real. We were taken to this shop as a part of our tour. Walked around the shop, politely declined the sales assistants and was then asked to wait another 20 minutes before leaving because we had to be there for a certain amount of time.
All I wanted to see was the great wall of China and the Ming tombs and we spent far more time in dodgy, overpriced places like this, full of tourists with bored looks on there faces lining up to get out of there as soon as possible. What a waste of time.
