Once a summer retreat for emperors, this 290-acre park is still a retreat for the crowd-weary tourist, who can relax here or stroll around ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and huge lake, stopping occasionally at a shop or tea-house.

The Summer Palace was absolutely huge!! It’s so beautiful and the details are amazing. Lots of rocks chosen by the empress are on show and the lake area is very impressive. It is a great tourist attraction.

Architecture is similar to Forbidden city. The lake is relief from the summer heat. If not for the crowds in summer, I would have taken a boat ride.

Nope, no need for a tour guide. As stated there are audio guides you can rent but it is such a large place I would just use a map and do a little online research before arriving.
