After 4 days in Beijing on the lamest tour ever, my husband and I grabbed a cab looking for some cool bars. We asked our taxi driver to go to some bar we looked up on our guidebook, but I think he took the liberty of dropping us off at Lotus Lane instead. This place is awesome. It's a lake surrounded on every side by trendy, modern bars and restaurants and best of all most of the people there were seemingly locals. At the entrace of the Lane there are throngs of locals doing ball room dance, selling massages, pirated DVDs, you name it. Well worth the cab ride, this is a must see location for a dose of decent nightlife.

Day or night, Beijing's cool Lotus Lane is buzzing. A string of cafes, bars, restaurants and funky shops along a canal, it's got atmosphere and al fresco, cool and cocktails. This really surprised me about Beijing.
My favourite bar in the strip was the Buffalo Club, a three level, intimate, retro French place with great live jazz and a down-to-earth hipness in the crowd that would be at home in Melbourne, New York or Paris. Great Californian wine by the glass.
There are rooftop bars where you see young Jingers basking in the afternoon sun (we were there in the final days of Fall for some unseasonal warmth) and at night you can sit along the canal if it's warm or cozy up indoors.
Some of the places are halls of the doof-doof, others a little kareoke... just wander till you find something that suits your taste and mood.
One hint. There is the main strip where most taxis from central Beijing will drop you off, (Buffalo is here), then there is another bit to it.
It's broken by the canal (I think.) But if you venture into the sidestreets of the interesting and perfectly safe adjoining hutong and keep heading along, you will find the rest of the action.
Some great shopping along here too.

Just a short walk from Lotus Lake an artificially built lake in the city of Beijing you will find the Lotus Market.
The area thrives at night and many people locals and tourists visit the area making it vibrant and lively. There are many snacks shops and souvenir shops and local crafts, it's reasonably priced.
Shops that don't have price labels on them are places for you to negotiate a price for the items, shops with price labels means it's non-negotiable.
The lake is a lovely place to relax from the busy city life and it's an around 30-40 minutes walk to Wang Fu Jing Commercial area.

My husband and I stayed at a hotel just a 7 walk min from this busy street. It is lovely to walk around the area, at both day and night. It's best to visit at nighttime just for the lights. But beware of a lot of expensive pubs and clubs. People will stand outside and try to lure you in offering cool ambiance and live music. And beer for up to €10. My personal recommendation is to walk around just seeing the busy streets and mesmerising lights. Then you go to Houhai street and find Roots. It's a reaggy bar one minute walk from the Yinding bridge. It's small and cozy, with reasonably priced beer and a killer house band.

The top place in Shichaihai, lots of restaurants and bars sit in this place, sometimes empty and sometimes crowded with local and foreigners (especially during school and high seasons). Several venues offer "al fresco" tables to enjoy drinks or food. You can spend easily 3-6 hours in this place, the offer us big. Recommended for tourist and residents. You can find several ATM machines around and public toiletry, if needed. Close to subway and bus stops.

Stumbled across this area last night and really enjoyed our walk around the shores, peeking in at the dozens of bars with live music and finding a good place to eat. If you can ignore the workers in front of every establishment as they try to pull you into their particular place, its a great nighttime stroll as you find a place to relax and unwind that suits your taste. Arrive a little before sunset and stay into the evening to enjoy the lights and atmosphere. Doesn't cost a thing to look around and enjoy, and you can spend as little or as much as you'd like on food, drink, etc. Wide range of music to choose from, perhaps could use some more good ol' rock and roll :-)

We got out of the subway station and across the street was this place. We were looking for something else but figured we would stop by. We stayed all day. The place was beautiful, located near water, and seemed like a very popular (local) tourist area. There are plenty of restaurants and small shops, bars, cafes, etc. There is also a Starbucks there which is always really busy but quite fast which was a nice treat. We got some squid and potatoes on sticks (which were delicious and a must!) and explored it. There is a temple near the front which is beautiful, and there shops with souvenirs, and other products. (We bought paper cut-out things and scarves which are beautiful). This took us about 6 hours but we also walked down an alley of Hutongs (which were very different from Lotus Lane but also really nice and quiet) and we sat outside of Starbucks for an hour or so. Overall, a really lovely day and I would highly recommend it!

This is great place to go in the evening, as it has its own atmosphere, it has lots of tourists, but still most people there were young Chinese.

We visited this area with our tour group and took rickshaw rides along the nearby lakes early in the morning. I understand this area has quite the nightlife, however, there that is not the atmosphere all the time. I almost wish we had walked instead of taking the rickshaws as it would have been beautiful to spent an hour or two enjoying a stroll along the lake. As part of our tour we visited the nearby huton with a local guide. It was a very interesting cultural experience!

Fun area full of small shops and restaurants surrounding a beautiful lake. Full of color, people, food, and great atmosphere. We visited at night which was beautiful with the colorful lights and lanterns reflecting on the water. It was very busy and fun. A lot of small restaurants to choose from and many shops to find pretty much any souveigneer you could ask for. Be ready to haggle for the best prices.
