Sum Ngai is a really neat place to visit and make nice purchases of brass, vases, lamps and other Chinese themed artworks and items. They are located along Kam Sheung Road in Kam Tin and are open from 10am to 5pm (Mon to Sat) and 11am to 4pm (Sun). Historically this was a factory in decades past but in time, goods production was moved over the border to Shenzhen and what you can visit today became a warehouse and showroom, filled with beautiful and high quality items, plenty on offer to tempt a purchase or two.

Interestingly, Sum Ngai is popular with both tour groups as well as expats here in Hong Kong. You'll find few seasoned, long-term expats unfamiliar with this shop or without a few of their items decorating their homes. Some local hotels and restaurants make purchases here for that purpose as well. The shopkeepers are very friendly, happy to allow you to wander around freely or share a nice conversation if you like. It all makes for a relaxed and comfortable experience be you there to shop or only look around and admire the many beautiful things that fill their shelves, tables and walls.

For those living in Hong Kong, this is well worth venturing out to. It's a fun day out with a group of friends. For most tourists it will be too far away, unless you have several days here. If you do make it, the shop is very accommodating and can deliver overseas or to a hotel within 24 - 48 hours (packaging is excellent).
Our shopping list mainly included porcelain ginger jars, vases and lamps. The prices are reasonable and although you can buy for a similar price elsewhere, the range here is amazing. Generally speaking, the smaller jars and vases were around $480HKD, medium $600 and large $800. Most porcelain pieces can be converted into a lamp (+ $300) and they can fit an electrical cord for most countries.
The choice can be overwhelming. Designs range from traditional to modern and they have an extensive range, esp of blue and white china. There is almost too much, especially on a first visit. It’s like being the proverbial kid in the candy store. I had looked briefly at the website the day before going but I wish I’d looked at it more carefully. I’d definitely recommend spending some time looking at the website to get a fair idea of what you want before you go.
In addition to porcelain there is also cloisonné, brassware and a good selection of small cabinets, tables.
The staff is very friendly and Venus couldn't be more helpful. Communication was easy and they take credit card. A few hours after we’d left, Venus sent each of us a text with a copy of our receipt and photos of our items. On the delivery day, they ring beforehand to confirm the time frame and check that someone will be home (delivery to Central/Mid-Levels was $450).

Given that the border to Shenzhen is currently closed, this has to be the very best place to buy gifts (and from comparing similar paintings that we have bought there and seen here, the mark-up isn’t huge, especially when compared to the shops which sell traditional furniture on HK Island and in Kowloon). The range of beautiful things on offer including furniture, artwork, ornaments and other stuff is a little overwhelming but utterly wonderful. Huge selection and wonderful staff as well.

We have visited this shop a few times now. Lovely friendly personal service always. We were due to have a shipment out of HK, nothing was too much trouble - changed my mind on items these were changed with no questions. Was able to deliver good quickly. Lovely products, professional service - well worth a browse around the shop. Thank you Venus and your family - so looking forward to seeing my products in our homes in Cyprus.

I used to visit this shop a lot in the 90’s. The cloisonné is just as beautiful as it has always been and I would highly recommend a visit.

Like other reviewers my experience with the brass factory goes back a long way - to 1991 to be precise, when I lived in Hong Kong. The ducks and the dragon lantern I bought back then have graced many a garden in many a place - always exciting comment and admiration. How delighted I was to see that the family has not only kept the old standards but also applied those to move with the times and to make an excellent website. A website truly reflecting the reality of what you will see when you pay a visit. As well, by having their workshop remade on the old site out in the New Territories, they can keep their high quality products alongside low prices as they are paying less in rent. Thanks to the MTR it isn't any trouble at all to get there and for those who genuinely like nature or have over-dosed on shopping, glitz and brand names, a visit could be combined with a walk. Visiting the brass family for anyone who is in the least bit interested in beautiful things at reasonable prices is less like doing onerous shopping and more like discussing with a relative how you'd like to enhance your house or garden or purchase a present for an old friend. To cap it all, their shipping costs are so reasonable and so rapidly calculated and organised that whatever you bought will be at your home within days after your return - in fact, they are so efficient that your order will likely precede your arrival if Hong Kong is not the last place on your itinerary. No matter how fragile the item, you may be confident it will arrive intact even if you are doing a stint in Kabul! If you see something that your budget doesn't stretch to at the time, the quality of service is such that you can be confident that as a customer you will be remembered and if you email later wanting some piece of tasteful chinoiserie you couldn't get out of your mind, you may be sure you will get what you want no matter where you live - and in the shortest time at the best rates anyone could desire.

We lived in HK for a few years 92’-97’ and purchased several products while we were there. All are still in use. I have also ordered online since we returned home and the service is great and prices as good as here for quality products. I ordered silk lampshades and all arrived safely.

I used to live in HK and on the few occasions I get to return always ensure I pop up to Kam Tin to see what the latest goodies are, seldom leaving without something. It is worth noting that if you are concerned about baggage and weight allowances that a) they are very happy to ship directly to your home and they pack the goods carefully and are totally reliable and b) that Cathay are reasonably tolerant of a carefully packaged item marked 'fragile' on your flight and we haven't had any disasters so far!

The family are lovely and helpful and are excellent when ordering direct from home countries without even visiting. They are very quick to respond to emails as well.

Very much a 'must go to'.

Lisa and her family have presided at Kam Tin for more than 60 years, and although I've been a regular visitor for only the past 4 years, Sum Ngai never fails to delight and reveal something new.

Cast brass, fine ceramics, and wooden furniture abound. Lisa is ever cheerful and helpful, also leaving you to browse quietly - she has an unerring sense of when you wish to be left to ponder and when you need help!

A must stop on my day tripping with visitors now, and also a great excuse always to go back for me.

Easy car parking right on the grounds available for a few cars. A nice portico in the garden where you can bring your own cold drink to sit and enjoy after shopping or just browsing. MTR now has a station at Kam Tin which is an easy 15 minute walk.

Top tip: even my children enjoy spending an hour here - a much more interactive way to engage them with Chinese arts and crafts than museum visits!

This shop includes many pottery items as well as brass. Where most of Hong Kong shopping is now dominated by designer labels, this shop is out of town, near the Wetlands park, and offers unique products. We used our cabin luggage to get our purchases home.
Their website, sumngaibrass.com, has instructions on how to get there.
