The area
Neighbourhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

It was loud, lots of bars, drinks, food. Young people getting smashed. This is a great place to come if you are young, you are with a group and you have money. If not, this is not your place. It’s basically one main drag, known as Langs, which is purely bars. The surrounding area is also filled with bars, we even drank at an old prison! The street is filled with all sorts of people and all sorts of venues, from cheap pubs to cocktail bars to huge clubs. The whole area has been priced out of average person's reach. Eateries, bars, everything charges exorbitant prices. New areas around Kowloon (Jordan Ferry) much nicer and budgeted for ordinary people like us.

What a train wreck LKF has become. The Saturday we visited it was reasonably busy. A young to underage young crowd, which is OK. The thing that annoys me most about this bar area is the bars are all dirty, the drink way overpriced and the scene decidedly grubby. There’s much better ways to do social drinking areas than this cess pit style. The smaller street approaches in Soho and SYP are good examples.
LKF bars. You need to do a radical rethink of what will keep people coming back and healthy and safe. With good value and fun times. At the moment, it’s awful.

Restaurants, cafes, bars and other eateries are lined up on both sides of the slope. I visited during the day so it was quiet with few people around, but it was just before Halloween so the monster decorations looked fun. You can't really experience the atmosphere of a night spot unless you come at night.

Like 10 bars one infront of the other one, sometimes you can listen the music from both, but the place is so much fun, a lot of people, mostly tourists and a lot of places to chose

LKF or lan kwai fong is a tourists' delight when it comes to night clubs and pubbing and especially if you love Live music... in LKF there is no dearth of places with live music - the choices are endless!! so i headed out to insomnia. brilliant service. local bands belting out hit after hit, and a tad expensive, but great smoky ambience. was there for almost 6 hours and then tottered out after consumption of some serious amounts of liqour. the crowd was a mix of local chinese youngsters and a lot of expats. great place to walk into on your trip to LKF. the place opens at 6pm. but the action starts only at around 8pm or later. the nite i was there there was no space to move!!! always a good sign...
the other place which is a cracker of a joint is Dusk till dawn!!! Expect the place to be packed like a can of sardines... once you are in - you can't get out kind of place... nor would you want to leave... because you will be surrounded by all happy people!!

Took 6 overseas guests there midweek after dinner to enjoy a drink and a chat. On entering the main street we were hounded by hustlers surrounding us, and trying to get us into their bar. Every bar was the same. All now have aggressive doormen (obviously on commission) to try to get you inside. We had planned to spend an hour or two, and perhaps a couple of thousand dollars. No wonder every bar was empty! We left. And went up to Wyndham Street, and had a great night. Very disappointing unless perhaps you are 18 and want street beers from 7-11.

I was very surprised at the nightlife I witnessed while vacationing in September/October 2004. I was clearly looking to mingle with locals at these bars/pubs and I guess I was introduced to the "dark side" of some of Lan Kwai Fong's bar's.
Some not all of the bar's(female) patrons are involved in the sex trade. Young and old men alike will soon find that some(female)patrons in these bars are soliciting for sex. My personal experience included being solicited for sex and being offered to spend the night with these woman for compensation. My completely candid observation is that this occurs much more than it does not occur. I'm quite sure these bars and pubs who I do not want to mention by name will hopefully not allow these woman into their clubs in the future.
I strongly feel these clubs/bars do not promote the activity nevertheless, it occurs much more frequently and on a regular basis than they would want to admit.

Is it safe to go alone a single girl by 11pm

Are bars in LKF open during Sundays? I think that's the only time I could go. Thanks!

Anyone know what the legal drinking age is in LKF?
Written November 19, 2018
You can drink at 18 (legal) - In HK they are not really strict about serving alcohol. In most places they don't even check IDS

Hi. Get a map first. Jump on the Airport Express train and get off at Central and at the MTR Station there will be directions. Its a short walk albeit uphill to the Mid-Levels. If unsure ask at the MTR Kiosk who are always helpful. Enjoy yur stop over.
Best wishes. Frank

Hi, I didn't go from the airport. You can catch a cab from the airport or the high speed train to Hong Kong Island and can catch a cap from there

Hi, I’m told there is good Brazilian restaurant in this area. Does anyone know the name of it please
Written October 23, 2017
Yes, I agree with others, most likely your recommendation is for Braza Churrascaria Brazilian Steakhouse located at 3/F, Grand Progress Building, No.15-16 Lan Kwai Fong. Walking distance from Central or Admiralty MTR stations or the Conrad / Island Shangri-La across the Park.
Personally, not sure why anyone would want to eat Western or LatAm (even good steak) when in SE Asia when so much excellent local food to choose from. Plenty of excellent Dim Sum restaurants around Lan Kwai Fong.

How do I get back to Sheung Shui (new territories) after a night out in LKF, with no MTR at this time? Prices would be helpful too.

I'm trying to find the area to visit the 'Travelator' which goes uphill and you can walk off at various levels to visit restaurants. I think it is close to Hollywood Rd on HK island and my husband thinks it is on Kowloon...Can you help please?
Written January 11, 2016
Ps. Locally it's known as 'The Escalator'. ( Central to Mid Levels escalator is the official name for maps etc) . Hope this helps.
