Visited on a rainy day so not crowded with visitors. The Jiming temple location enjoys a little hight over a section of the ancient city wall and Xianwu lake. It is relatively simple and small. It has a feeling of visiting Chinese temples in the 80's and 90's. Cherry blossom and others have just started in the neighborhood, the scenery and colors should be beautiful to watch by the end of March.

The original temple dates back to 527 A.D. Initial title of the temple was “Tung-Tai Temple (同泰寺). It was ruined and rebuilt many times in the history. Temple with the current tile was built in Ming Dynasty (1387 A.D.), and the present building was reconstructed in 1981.
The title “Ji” means “chicken” and “Ming” means “crowing” There are three legends about the title of the temple.
The first tale:
In the ancient time, there was a centipede monster occupied the Jou-Hua mountain. It endangered the life and properties of people. The Jade Emperor of the heaven (The Great God) sent a Golden Chicken to the earth to help people dealing with the trouble,
After a fierce fight, the centipede monster was killed. Unfortunately, the Golden Chicken was severely injured and passed away finally. People set up this temple in memory of the Golden Chicken.
The second tale:
When the Nanjing City wall was initially built. It collapsed several times, and the construction could not be finished. A fortune teller told the Emperor: If a Treasure-Gathering Bowl (聚寶盆) could be put into the base of the Wall, the construction will be smoothly completed. The Emperor borrowed a Treasure Bowl from the owner, Mr. Shen Wan-San. Promised that, it will be returned to Mr.Shen when roosters crow at dawn.
Weirdly, roosters in Nanjing never crow after then. The City Wall was successfully constructed and stands firm till now. So,……. the Treasure Bowl is still buried under the Nanjing Wall, and the Zhonghua Gate was once called the "Treasure Bowl Gate". The Temple was set up to commemorate the legend.
The third explanation is that the temple is at the foot of Chicken Cage Mountain. It was named after the Mountain.

The Jiming Temple is a very renowned Buddhist temple in Nanjing. The entrance seemed to be small but this is a large Buddhist temple complex.
There is an entry fee of 10 RMB. Once you pass the main gate, you are given three incense sticks for offering to the God. The temple is on a hillock and as you climb up the steps you find different temples of Buddha in different poses and sizes.
You will find many Chinese bowing thrice to Buddha with folded hands and resting on their knees on cushions arranged for this purpose. I never thought that the Chinese were so fond of this God. You will also find numerous shops at various places. Some sell candles of various shapes particularly the Lotus flower. Lots of varieties of incense sticks are sold also in this shop. There was another shop which was selling books on Buddhist literature. Another shop was selling a variety of Jade, and other stones crafted into pendants, necklaces and other ornaments.
The place is so peaceful and the visitors too maintain the tranquility, talking in whispers. One place has a sheltered room where numerous large candles are lit. We went to that place and lit our incense sticks before offering them at a nearby place marked for it. Photography is not allowed in many of the temple interiors and some of the shops. Finally at the top there is an eight floor Pagoda. We were informed by the caretaker to go round the building thrice before we were let on to the circular steps to go to the top. The ground floor has a splendid Buddha statue in gold. Then there are numerous hand sized Buddha statues arranged as panels all round the room. All these panels have LED lighting. Each of the floors above was having a Buddha statue in the centre with Buddha panels on all the walls with LED lighting. Each floor has a balcony along the circumference with three doors. As we progressed to the top, the scene became more beautiful. The metal steps, the metal wall with encryptions along the steps was beautiful
.
The scene from the top floor was breathtaking. It is one of the highest points in the city and has a clear view of the city’s skyscrapers. On one side, you will find a path leading to the Nanjing Wall which is similar to the Great Wall of China. Many people walk on the parapet of this wall which is xx km long. The other side of the wall is the Xuanwu lake. An excellent place for boating. The Nanjing Railway station is also closeby.

Jiming Temple 鸡鸣寺 - 古寺南朝480寺之首.
Apparently the temple is filled with Cherry Blossoms but the season has passed by the time we arrived. It seems to be a popular place for OOTD shots especially with their bright yellow (royal) walls.
Perched above the hill, one gets a good view of the city, old city wall and the Xuanwu Lake just below. Entrance fee RMB10 per adult, bought at the door and comes with 3 joss sticks that one can redeem at the top of the temple to give prayers.

Not a must-see, but it leads into the city wall and can make for a nice day. The temple seems fairly new and it's only 10 RMB.

We have visited lots of temples across China and Jiming was just ok. Did not feel the spiritual prescense of some of the other temples. The view of the lake and purple mountain from the back of the property is beautiful. Not a must see.

The temple is completely commercialized. The entry rose to 10Rmb and the inside is basically exclusively shops. On weekends you can't make one step without bumping into a dozen pepople. There are plenty of other temples in the area (eg. In suzhou) that are not overrun by tourists and where you can see monks rather than tourists. Avoid at all costs on weekends. Otherwise still not particular interesting unless you want to by jewelry.

Great for some photos and we went to City Wall right after in late afternoon. Wasn't too busy and yellow color and lots of incense burning made for a peaceful atmosphere.

Beautiful temple, cheap admission (10¥), and a very nice experience. The pagoda is quite nice, and I appreciated seeing the people performing rituals with the incenses.

You only pay 10rmb to enter which includes 3 scenteds sticks, and the temple grounds is quite huge. Takes a good 30 minutes to walk around and see everything nicely. Great vantage points too for overlooking the Nanjing wall and lake plus city surroundings. It's a steep climb to the top of the hill so I wouldn't recommend it for elderly folks with back issues. Nice feel around the area with cherry blossoms lined up next to the road where the entrance Spring is definatley the best time to be here snapping photos. Worth another visit
