    Real skull of Buddha!
It is said that a piece of the real skull of Buddha was found inside an old pagoda in Nanjing in 2010. A spectacular shrine was built in an area where many Buddhist temples used to be, Niushoushan (Cow's head mountain). Completed in 2015, this is a new tourist attraction in Nanjing. The structure is stunning. The ‘palace’ comprises three stories above the ground and 6 stories underground. The main attractions are underground, the lowest floor holding the holy relic. The skull itself is not displayed. There are many statues and artworks throughout the building, which are absolutely spectacular. I was told that they spent close to 1 billion dollars for the construction of the building and the surrounding area. If you visit Nanjing, this is a must-see place.

    Amazing Place.
“The Niushou Mountain testifies to half the history of Nanjing.” The Niushou Mountain is the foremost of the four major scenic spots in Nanjing. The paramount element of the scenic area is the Foding Palace, which not only enshrines the parietal relic of Shakyamuni Buddha but is also a sublime must-see location. Experience the pure Buddhist light in the Grand Zen View, overlook the scenery from the top of Foding Pagoda, and touch the sky in the Thousand Buddha Hall. Every view is guaranteed to be awe-inspiring.

Temple under the mountain and pagoda
We visited the area primarily to see the pagoda. First we thought to book a tour but the hotel told us we would be better to go by taxi and get our own tickets at the gate and make our way around. Great advice as the tour was a few hundred dollars but when finding our own way there plus entry and bus ride to the mountain was $50 each. The area is great to walk around but the big surprise was the temple built under the mountain 5 levels down. This was incredible. We were also lucky to see the show inside the ground level temple. I so advise a few hours to walk around.

    Incredible
Of my week’s stay in Nanjing this was the most spectacular place I visited. Staggering views and scenery in both the main pagoda temple (the other was closed) and the adjacent building which contains two massive underground halls which were breathtaking. Clearly a very modern creation but the artistry is incredible.

Highly recommended - we went during Qingming Festival - which was on the one hand a challenge due to busy roads ahead of the Park (lots of graveyards on the way) but on the other hand we enjoyed the entire stay on site with a lot of sightseeing and hiking - the entire site is really well organized and perfect for families to stroll for a couple of hours - for all Buddhists it is definitely a must even if there is principally no history but it is just overwhelming and stunning ...

We came to Nanjing to visit Maoshan a mountain which is meant to be a holy place for Taoism. We then heard that there is another mountain with Buddha's relic.

A 45 minute taxi ride from Nanjing city, this is a large park built at Niushou Shan (mountain) and the government spent RMB4 billion. There are various places to visit in the park and shuttle buses ferrying visitors from one place to another for RMB20. There are 2 routes and entrance fees is dependent on which routes you take.

We didn't have much time to visit so we focused on the Usnisa Palace which houses the Buddha's relic. A modern building that is 9 storeys and built into an iron quarry. There are rooms for prayers and lots of Buddhist statues. The main attraction is a room filled with Buddha paintings and statues - very colourful and nice lighting.

Admiral Zheng He who navigated the world 7 times and some said to reach the Americas before Columbus is buried in a spot within these mountains.

This park was reopened in 2015 and not many people are aware of it yet. So it is well worth a visit especially for Buddhists.

Jaw dropping update of historic monastery. Like visiting the Crystal Cathedral or the Cathedral of Brasilia, who says that religious sites have to ancient and musty? Made up of a pagoda, a temple/monastery, and a "palace", this Buddhist Theme Park will become one of the main attractions in this history packed city.

About halfway inbetween the city and the airport, Niushoushan is the site of ancient buddhist monasteries that date back 1200 years, and was also briefly the Court of the breakaway Southern Tang Dynasty of the mid 900's AD. It has historically housed a relic of the Gautama Buddha. But also because of its historical associations, it has been the focus of political "statements" culminating in the digging up of the hill in the last century for an iron mine and stone quarry.

Fast forward to this century, through a public-private partnership, the local government has channelled billions of yuan of investment into redeveloping Niushoushan. The idea is to update the Buddhist themed hill into the 21st century. And did they ever. The pagoda is a rare square shape and sits besides the elegant temple monastery with brilliant gold and exquisitely carved and painted saints, bodhi's, and buddhas. The palace is on a different part of the hill and a long hike (or short ride) away. It is built into the pit that was the iron mine quarry. So the nine story palace takes advantage by building into the already excavated hillside, even using the stark scarred hillsides as a savage zen aesthetic backdrop.

While the temple and pagoda are beautiful, they are updates of similar structures seen around the buddhist world. The palace is the real star attraction. Nine storeys tall, it houses the re-emerged relic in a gigantic crystal chamber at least 50 yards across. On another floor is a buddhist worship room worthy of any Burmese Shrine with ceiling studded with larger than life floating bodhi's. There is a spa-like chamber with ornate trees and a thirty foot reclining buddha set amongst halls lined with thousands of different buddhas representing every possible flavor of buddhism.

This site re-opened only recently, so it is still missing concessions like hotels and refreshment stands. There is a sit down vegetarian canteen at the palace. Still, suggest bringing your own water and snacks. And be prepared for the level of time commitment and physical exertion one would normally reserve for touring the five DisneyWorld parks --- if they were set into a hillside.

This natural park and hillside is located just outside Nanjing suberb. It cost us 80 RMB to ride there with a taxi. 98 RMB for the entrance and 20 RMB for the bus ride to the top of mountain. Everything is so beautiful and clean there (even the toalets). Nice autumn colors and not too many people even though it was Saturday. The Usnisa Palace was amazing. Just like from a fairytail. We even had a nice vegetarian lunch there. And walked all the way back down the hill. What a great day

NiuShouShan is gorgeous, actually the most impressive side trip during my visit to Nanjing. Make sure you don't miss the FoDingGong, the temple at the top of the mountain. It is just beautiful beyond words. Take the shuttle service (a small fee, purchase at the entrance) to different points of interest, otherwise it could be lots of walking.

NiuShouShan is out of city so you do need to take a taxi ride or just use DiDi to get a ride share. It is totally an awesome day trip while in Nanjing!

Easy to get to from Nanjing city by Didi or taxi, and relatively cheap. Cost me RMB40 for one way Didi journey. Park is huge with so much to see. As it is fairly new there were people still landscaping but it still looks lovely - even on a rather grey day. Slight uphill walk to temples at the top of the hill, about 45 min walk but shuttle buses are available for RMB20. The jewel in the crown has to be the Usnisa Palace at the top, with the Hall of 1000 buddhas. Stunning! Could have stayed a lot longer just to take it all in. There are also places to eat (vegetarian too), and a Starbucks and Haagen Daas close to the park entrance for those who need their coffee fix. All in all a great day out away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

the niushoushan park is a ways away and you will need a taxi or didi to get to it. The blossom trees are beautiful and there is absolutely zero crowds to deal with. well worth taking the trip out to see it.
