It will be a 40+ hours train ride. Not particularly pleasant. Flying in seems wiser and then if you wish ride train back from Lasa to Qinghai (21 hrs) and you pass through Hoh Xil which has been included in the UNESCO list... More

The agent who is processing your Tibet permit can book your train tickets. I would suggest you take train from Xining instead of Chengdu. That will save time. Also actual scenery starts only after Xining.
