The Chinatown of Jakarta began long before Indonesia existed as a nation...

The Chinatown of Jakarta began long before Indonesia existed as a nation and was originally the Chinatown of Batavia. This was the area where the Dutch required the Chinese to live. Today, the whole area is called Glodok and includes traditional houses, markets, architecture and some very beautiful Chinese temples; the Da Shi Miao and the Vihara Dharma Bhakti temples are both popular tourist attractions. The Glodok Market is one of the great commercial centers of Jakarta where you can buy everything from antiques to laptops.

Reading the reviews here on TA, we almost skipped the Chinatown. However the descrition of a walk in the Jakarta 25 Excursions changed our mind. And we were so glad that we followed the walk described in this book. The Chinatown was a pleasant surprise; it was clean, compared to the streets of Jakarta, full of Chinese minding their own... Jakarta's Chinatown is reachable by commuter train or by Transjakarta. If you came by commuter train, stop at Stasiun Jakarta Kota (Jakarta Kota station). Glodok is located near and within walking distance to that station. In Glodok, you can find food just like in every Chinatown in many countries. Local people sell fruit or street food. If you dare, try... More

For a food lover like I am, every Chintatown in every city is a food heaven to me. Of course every Chinese town has its own charm and so does the one in Jakarta. In fact the town in here looked older than the ones in Singapore and Malaysia. It has a very different vibe and I really enjoyed my... More

Always nice to visit an area to see what it is like. There are many chinese medicine shops with food and clothing stalls.

Growing up near this area, I just keep falling in love every time I pay this place a visit. I just love the ambiance here. People are so busy with their business but very friendly and seem calm. This place has so many hidden gems when it comes to food. If you're a pork lover, you can easily find pork... More

Walking through the back streets of Glodok is fascinating, it is not hard to imagine how life must have been a hundred years ago with all of the smells and sights. Watch out for the massage parlours.
