It is a hard, steep climb up the mountain. It is an overnight walk so take a good head torch with you as well as good climbing shoes, plenty of water and some energy food. On a clear morning, it is a beautiful sunrise while the volcano is releasing its fumes/steam.

I'm arrived at registration counter around 3 am. They charge Rp225k per person on weekend and Rp300k per group for a guide. While waiting for the guide, me and my three other friends get prepared our self with a day pack hiking equipment and needs. Around 3.30 am, we started to hike up from New Selo Base Camp. We get... It was an interesting place and we were thrilled to be near a live volcano. We visited the Merapi Golf Club, a very serene place. The lava boulders in the fast flowing streams and the lava sand found everywhere tells its own story. Apparently the land becomes very fertile after the flow of lava that vegetation has already covered the... More

I suggest my fellow traveler to plan your tour to Merapi volcano during sunrise as during the afternoon the sun strikes it would be really hot and you may need sunblock to prevent sunburn. The journey is great. Not suitable for pregnant lady or anyone who can't stand bumpy road as it is super duper bumpy.

The most exciting trip, have a ride on the jeep for 1.5hour to see the site of volcano and its catastrophic events. Definitely make you feel awe. Make sure you get a good and informative jeep driver. The most exciting excursion ever.

Jeep ride on Mt Merapi. What an experience & interesting jeep ride. An alternative to trekking Mt Merapi. There are options for jeep ride, shortest being 1.5 hours.

We started the day very early from Malioboro. After an interesting car ride, watching the street merchants set up their day, we arrived at the basin of a jungle. We took an easy hike up to views in the rain forest where we could see the sunrise over Mt. Merapi, the live volcano. Afterwards, we went to Merapi and took... More

They called it the Merapi Lava Tour. It is an alternative to trekking Merapi as you could get a closed up view of Merapi Volcano. There are short, medium and long trip - longest being 3 hours. We booked through Tourjogja.

We started at 4am by getting picked up by a friendly minibus driver who had arranged a little packed breakfast for the 30 minute drive to 'basecamp'. Once we arrived at the base camp we transferred to the Jeep and a different, less proficient at English but still super friendly, driver. After 15 minutes of a very bumpy mountain-side journey...
