Javanese Culture Museum
Jan. 2020
Museum with collection of instruments, paintings, letters, photos, sculptures and also the history of batik from the royal families of Yogyakarta and also Solo. It's located in a beautiful building. My friends bought four entrance tickets but when we entered the building and the staff saw us as foreigner, we had to get back to the ticket booth to change the ticket for "Foreigner Ticket" that cost double than the local price. Yep, tourist!

Great presentation distracted by great architecture
Feb. 2020 • Couples
Great museum, great price-to-value. Well managed, neat, well trained staffs.

In short this museum tells about Javanese kingdom stories. Not so many antiques, expect batiks pictures and photos. It’s more about story and history.

What I do like the most is the architecture, the building, the surroundings.
Have some great food and snacks after.

Great Secluded Museum
Jul. 2019 • Family
This museum located in Kaliurang and quite far from downtown Yogyakarta. However, it has exquisite exterior and interior building with natural design. It has lots of private collection from collectors that remark the Mataram and Ngayogyakarta Sultan. This museum is private owned, there for quite pricey for the entrance fees, but it's worth it. They also provide tour guide included with entrance fees.

A private museum that appreciates its privacy.
It is a beautiful place. The batik and the paintings were very nice.

However, the tour was crowded in most places and must be a guided tour. The guide ushered us along quickly, and we couldn't take photos until the very end of the trip(of a replica of a borobudur frieze).

It is beautiful, but you go through quickly and have no time to relax and enjoy the scenery around you.

A very worthwhile tour
Jan. 2020 • Couples
The museum contains valuable paintings of the Sultan's family, and exhibits such as batik depicting Javanese culture. The grounds are beautiful but photography is not allowed until in a special area at the conclusion of the tour, which is just outside a restaurant. The guide was excellent, but she spoke very fast. All visit must use a guide, either English or Indonesian speaking, and the prices for either differ a lot.
There's plenty of parking.

Qualified Museum

I love this museum. The place is so great, unique, ancient, feeling so Javanese. It was worth a visit! The guide was so nice. We took photos sometime, helped by guide. Its located in Kaliurang, near a Kids playground, hostels, and some Merapi tourism objects. They have paintings, colonial poems, statues, masks, etc. I enjoyed every steps, every museum stuff. I love being inside here. If you re around Kaliurang, and you re done with Merapi Lava Tour, spend your time to visit here, im sure you killed your time worth.

Pleasantly surprised

Visited here after Burobudor. Had been mentioned to me by woman at coffee shop, and another museum as well as my driver.
The tour of this museum is by guided tour, entry fee is 100k for foreigner. (not sure for locals)
I typically avoid guided tours like the plague.
It's a good thing I didn't know that before going and until after buying ticket, or I would have missed out on a very insightful tour.
One can only take photos in a couple of places, which is more understandable once one begins the tour.
Tour introduces one to a more intimate history of the royal families.
There is also a restaurant and coffee shop at the location.
Couple small local vendors at parking area.
Some work was being done at the site, perhaps for more exhibits?

Gorgeous and unique..
Nov. 2019
I have always wanted to visit this beauty site for awhile now. But considering the distance is pretty far from the city centre and I usually use online car services in Jogja, it seems a bit too much to visit Ullen Sentalu. But for my last trop to Jogja, I really did put a bit effort to do so. We took a car from our hotel in Malioboro area to this Merapi area haha I know we splurged a bit for this trip. Anyway, it worthed all the damn penny. The building is gorgeous so is the surrounding area/garden/park? I did not know how massive it was and I was stunned. We got a ticket for guided tour and it was very fascinating to learn about the history and to see all the crazy unique collections inside the museum from the art collections, fabric/batik until all the hand-written letters by Jogja royal family. I was genuinely pride that in my country there is this gorgeous looking and yet very professionally managed museum. Don't get me wrong we have thousands of musea in Indonesia but this one is very exquisite. The guide herself was very knowledgable and she spoke very good English. I might come back to Ullen Sentalu for my next visit to Jogja. Never been this satisfied after visiting a local museum in my entire life. Kudos for the management and keep up the good work.

Can skip
Dec. 2019
The museum has good architecture, which is the only major complement I can give it. There are multiple rooms in the museum, all of which are dedicated to the life/art and clothing of the royal family. They have a good collection of Batik fabrics, and quite a few good pictures of the royal family. The family tree was confusing, and the museum visit did not clarify much - still confused as to who is who. Overall, however, a visit to the museum felt like a 'long ride for a short slide'... drive a long, long, long way through the traffic of this sprawling city for a small 20 minute glimpse into a few historical topics.
Overall, can skip this, unless you have a great interest in Javanese culture/history (of which, you can get a very small introduction here).....or have extra time on your hands and are getting bored to death.
The traffic to/from here to the City can be bad...
