My husband and I wanted to see the real Singapore behind the glitz of high rises and man made architectural wonders. We took the Chinatown Tour and Joo Chiat Food Tours led by Leong. On the Chinatown tour, we were introduced to typical Singaporean food at a kopi cafe and hawker centers. He introduced us to Chinese Buddhism at the... More

With my husband and 2 kids (13 and 11) in tow, we weren't quite sure what to expect. Our expectation of the tour was to be introduced to the local food the way the locals eat it. We were not disappointed. Leong was an excellent tour guide. He showed us the best places to eat from the Kopi Express, hawker... More

My husband and I spent 3 days in Singapore which we enjoyed tremendously. We hired private tour guides to give us a different perspectives of the country. Doing so really allowed me to compare guides. Experiencing food is a must for me when I travel to a new country. Singapore ha a great abundance of delicious food. One thing you... More

We travelled to Singapore pre-cruise and so had a few days to enjoy this wonderful city. Selecting Leong from Betel Box for our tour the first day was an excellent way to begin! He was full of information about the history, current issues and future plans of Singapore including politics, religion and beauty. And he was very friendly and personable... More

This tour allowed me not only to enjoy the food Chinatown has such as popiah, chee kuey, yummy fruits but also learn more about Chinatown's past. Visiting the URA city gallery allowed me to have a sense of how far Singapore has grown. IT is a must for tourists visiting Singapore to join this tour or even locals (if possible)... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. It was extremely informative and a great display of what singapore has to offer food wise. There was no question our guide didn't know the answer too. The food was delicious and I would highly recommend to anyone who is visiting singapore or lives there

Staying in Joo Chiat

Neighbourhood Profile
Joo Chiat
The Joo Chiat area is the traditional home of Peranakan culture in Singapore, an ethnic group descending from the blending of Chinese and Malay families in the 15th century. The neighbourhood is packed with colourful shops, local characters, and quiet charm. The main streets overflow with diners enjoying katong laksa, the signature Peranakan spicy noodle soup. Signs of youthful entrepreneurship are visible as well, with modern cafes, bars, and shops abounding. Visit Joo Chiat to take a break from the big city sights and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with a laid-back and local vibe.
