About
Fort Canning Park is one of Singapore's most historic landmarks. It has witnessed Singapore's golden age, when Malay Kings ruled from its peak, and watched as the island transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a vibrant trading hub in the 19th century. During World War II, the hill was instrumental in Singapore's war efforts with numerous military buildings located there. One of these buildings was the Fort Canning Bunker or Battle Box, where the decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese was made by the British. Many war relics from Singapore's colourful history have survived on the hill and are still visible today.Although the hill has since lost its imposing stature, its distinctive charm still remains. The lush lawns draw picnics, concerts, theatre productions and festivals, while weddings, parties and gatherings are a regular sight in the park's elegant indoor function rooms. Visit the park today and experience the tranquillity once enjoyed by the Malay royals of yore.

- SuratrichardSurat Thani, Thailand2,513 contributionsSo many steps!Despite visiting Singapore on five previous occasions, this was our first visit to Fort Canning Park. Unfortunately our visit took place on a rainy day so we didn’t spend as much time there as we would have liked. Nevertheless, it’s a place certainly worth visiting. Be warned, there are many, many steps! The wet weather meant extra care was needed when going up and down due to the rain and leaves making everything a little slippy. There’s plenty to see including some magnificent trees and interesting buildings which were mainly built for British armed services. One building is now an hotel and another a particularly interesting museum and gallery. Admission is free and there are some cafes within the park. Well worth visiting. Use the MTR to get there.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 6, 2023
- AliinAusPerth, Australia187 contributionsLots of steps - but worth itOur daughter had recommended visiting Battle box at Fort Canning Park. What an enjoyable few hours we had exploring that and the gardens. The Battle Box is a must and a hidden (literally) treasure. a former British command centre in WWII, it is steeped in history and you can imagine the conditions for the men stationed there and you could almost feel the desperation and sadness of having to surrender Singapore to the Japanese. The park itself does have a lot of steps (wear good walking shoes), and absolutely worth a visit.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten January 19, 2024

Historical and beautiful. Can connect to mass transit a few spots. Adjacent to some small malls and between big street. Not far walk to China town and Riverwalk attractions.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 21, 2024

- liucy752Taipei, Taiwan1,654 contributionsA beautiful historic parkAs the "Central Park" of Singapore. Located on a hill around 50 meter high, It is a beautiful park with trees, bushes and green grass. There are escalators on the west entrance. There are some attractions in the park, for example: Fort Wall and Gate, Fort Canning Art Center, the Battle Box, The sacred place and tomb of Keramat Iskandar Shah (the ruler of 14th century Singapore), the replica of the Fort Canning lighthouse, …… etc I have a special interest on the Battle Box. It was the Underground Far East Command Center during WW II, and has been transformed into a museum now. According to internet information, the museum is well designed, contains models and dummies that simulate the operation of the military base. Unfortunately the museum was not open on the day we visited. It should be noted that in addition to closing on Mondays and Tuesdays, it also takes a two-hour break at noon every day.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten February 17, 2024

I’m not really sure it should be described a typical park, there are many different areas to cover. We spent 2 hours walking around on a sunny morning. Lots of nice plants to look at. I generally wouldn’t recommend for those with walking issues.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 16, 2024
- Brown_SamanthaKennewick, Washington1,783 contributionsBeautiful and large park with significant history values - worth a good day visitWe were following a self guided walking tour we found online, made a good day of it exploring this vast park. It is easily reached via the Singapore MRT system. First stop was the Tree Tunnel staircase (see separate review). Then we walked up the long steps to continue to visit the Fort Gate, Sally Port (very hidden and you can take the narrow steps to reach the upper level, fun to do), Battle Box, Fort Canning Centre at the top of the hill with large green space. Continued to Sang Nila Utama Garden, beautiful and lush area with many sculptures. Walked over to the Fort Canning Hotel, and then continued down to see the lighthouse at Raffles House and the flagstaff pole. Also really enjoyed the Pancur Larangan with the water features and springs. From there you can take the escalator to reach the upper part of the park. We found the Keramat Sultan Iskandar Shah tomb/shrine near the Fort Canning Centre. There is a lot of shade, which was nice for the hot afternoon. Also plenty of clean restroom facilities. We also found a food court near the National Museum of Singapore, ended our visit there for some food and beverages.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 18, 2024

A great place to walk, sit and picnic or to visit The Battle Box, Spice Gardens, and The National Museum. A children's play park can also be found at the base.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten April 30, 2024
- annis_79Jakarta, Indonesia46 contributionsFort Canning's visit under the rain ☺️Fort Canning Park is a historical gem in the heart of Singapore. The visit was enlightening, offering a deep dive into the fort’s storied past. The well-preserved artifacts and informative plaques provided a captivating educational experience. Although the popularity of the site was evident by the queue at the bunker, it was a minor distraction from the overall charm. The unexpected rain added a refreshing touch to the lush greenery, and thankfully, it didn’t dampen our spirits or hinder our exploration. Navigating the park’s extensive grounds, we uncovered hidden nooks that echoed tales of yesteryears. It’s a testament to Singapore’s dedication to preserving its heritage amidst modernity. A must-visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 24, 2024
- Ravi karan K6 contributionsInformative & InquisitiveThis is a hidden gem of Singapore. Historically this place was the kingdom for kings who ruled Singapore during monarchy , following which it was commissioned as army barracks by Britishers when they ruled here. Some noteworthy places to check out here include Battlebox ( must sign up for audio guide to get the memorable experience here), heritage gallery, hotel fort canning, botanical gardens displaying collection of trees particularly liked by respectable leaders of modern Singapore and forbidden spring. It delves you deep into Japanese invasion during ww2 and subsequent creation of sovereign Singapore. Tree tunnel at Fort Canning Park is a perfect photoshoot location for any Instagram aficionado.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten June 2, 2024

Alright Singapore has several amazing parks and gardens. However, if you had to pick the best one in the center of the city with the most historic value, this is it. In the middle of the city is a hilltop with a level terrace top just up from the Singapore River. This is where Singapore began as the hilltop for the kings of Singapura in the 14th and 15th centuries. The palaces and burial sites were on this verdant hill.
Then in the 19th Century Raffles built his house and fort here. It continued to serve the British empire until 1942 and WWII as the site of British HQ during the battle of Singapore in the Battlebox.
Today it is simply a beautiful park that has history and architecture as well as serving as a reservoir for the city. There are great trails for walking around the park and seeing its historic structures as well as amazing views of the city. The trees and the rest of the flora are simply amazing. This is a great place that you must visit during your stay for the history, views and vegetation.

Fort Canning Park is an awesome green space and one of Singapore's most iconic historic sites. It was the scene of the Allie's war room prior to the disastrous fall of Singapore to the Japanese army in World War Two (WW11). On walkabout, we enjoyed the colourful flowers, intricate sculptures and beautiful trees in the botanical gardens here. We also chose to do battle box tour (highly recommended for history buffs) to check out the bunker and learn more about the intense happenings here during war time. But, whether or not, you are into the historic and or the botanical, it just simply a fantastic place to go for a walk (or take the escalators in some sections ...) and or just take in some amazing city (see my YouTube) views.

The Fort Canning Park with a luxury hotel is all about nostalgia, with an "air-raid shelter" (admission fee, yes!) amidst the greenery. Lovely park with jogging paths, an exhibition hall (about Jap invasion) and an expensive hotel, all take you down the Memory Lane. "Defence, captives, torment 'n the like" were reminiscent during our visit there. Though an MRT station 'n busy traffic are only 500 m. away, the park/ hotel remains tranquil 'n worthwhile to visit.

This is a great place for a walk in the park with your loved one. Lots of big trees, old stone Fort walls and cannons, with nice landscaped hilled parkland. We stayed at the hotel here and after a few whiskeys had a great drunken stroll around this beautiful spot at night.

This is a real gem just outside the city. We entered the park via Penang Road, which was at the bottom. Thankfully there were escalators to take one to the top. There are a number of trails one can take, we headed for the Old Fort Gate, and Raffles house.
It really is a beautiful Park with some of the most amazing trees and flowers. It's a very peaceful space and one really feels at one with nature. It's a magical escape from the bustling city. If one enters from the River Valley Road entrance ( opposite Clarke Quay ) There will be. number of steps to climb, that will bring you to Raffles House. There is also a cafe for refreshments. There are plenty of rest places along the way. Personally I am glad we had the escalator option, which meant our walk was down hill all the way. Well worth the effort get there.

Fort Canning Park certainly exceeded expectations. It is such a well maintained and beautiful park with so much history etched into every site. So many historical attractions to see around the park, including old cannons, buildings and bells. I highly recommend the battle box tour, it was very interesting exploring the underground war rooms from WW2. The park is huge, so leave plenty of time if you want to explore it all. There is plenty of walking involved and it’s very hot, so plan to go early in the day and bring plenty of food and water, because when we were there you couldn’t buy much inside the park. Also lots of stairs to must be relatively fit. Great experience and also views of Marina Bay Sands!

History from the time of sail where control from the hill of the ships was conducted through WW2 and the bunker system where the british tried to stem the Japanese to present. Fauna of all sorts with flowers and shade in abudance. Lawns to relax on or play.

We had breakfast at the long-awaited famous croissant shop. A new store had opened in a park. It was a woodsy one-story store surrounded by lush greenery.
Although it had just opened, there was already a line, and we ordered while looking at the many items: croissants, chocolate rolls, camembert and mushroom sandwiches, and cafe au lait. All the items are made in-house and are crispy with a moist interior, with a rich buttery flavor and deliciousness that is irresistible.

This park is like stepping back in time. Singapore really manages to balance history abd tradition well with the needs of the modern world and this park is an example of that.
A former British military bunker and defense point, it's been repurposed into a large green park for locals and tourists alike to enjoy. You'll often see people dog walking and exercising here.
The bunkers and cannons are still present, in fact the bunker has been transformed into the #1 rated museum in Singapore. There are many remnants of it's military past with structures, stairs and ruins from 1920-1940.
This park is very hilly so expect some steep climbs, and a lot of the foliage and trees give an 'older feeling to the park. Raffles has a building nearby too
It connects to the MRT, has parking and nearby F&B.
Check it out, you won't regret it.

Hi Nigel Accessibility will be very limited . Best bet would be to drive the nice winding path to the hotel lobby and have a coffee. I would recommend going to the Botanical garden instead . I have just now posted a review for you with photographs for you to see what I mean as well as enjoy the surroundings

Can you take a picnic with bottle of wine into the park to enjoy?
Written May 10, 2018
Better to be armed with the facts rather than a guess. Drinking alcohol in public places, which includes parks, is only banned after 10:30pm so unless you are having a very late picnic, there is no issue.
If you do a search "What you can or cannot do under the new alcohol law Singapore" and read the Straits Times article at the top of the search list, you will be able to read the facts.
Tripadvisor does not allow me to post the actual link.

No, likely it will open in Sept 2015. You can access it by doing a 55SGD walking tour of "Through Fog and Fire" conducted by SG History Consultants. Call Changi War Museum for more details on schedule. We took a Wed 2:30-6pm tour.
