You can see the volcano for miles and makes a great backdrop to Lake Llanquihue, You can drive part of the way up but we just went round the base. It is a great shape just what you want a snow covered mountain to be!

We visited as part of a tour. The view of the volcano from the Petrohue waterfalls and the Todos Los Santos Lake were both absolutely spectacular on a clear sunny day. Visiting the volcano itself affords good views of Lake Llanquihue, the Andes and other volcanoes, if there isn't cloud, but the chair lift is a complete rip-off. Almost £15 return to only the first station (the other one wasn't even open). They are really just cashing in and charging excessively for a simple old lift. People of moderate fitness could probably save the money and climb the trail to the same point, and to walk down wouldn't even need you to be seasoned walker - just good footwear (we did it in boots in the snow). That would at least save 1/3 of the price and avoid lining the pockets of the operators any more than necessary.

If you're in the area this is a "must do". There's a considerable drive from the main road around the lake up to the chairlift base station. Allow time - it twists and winds and is steep in places, but surfaced and well maintained. A return ticket to the top station (2022 prices) for an adult was CLP 20,000 (about £20), and well worth it. I visited twice over the course of a week during the summer. One day was pleasantly warm, the other had a cool breeze. Both days were sunny and clear. The views were to savour. There's a walk at the middle station that's well worth the effort. There are two walks at the summit station - the longer one takes you out to a viewpoint; the other, more poplular walk takes you up to another viewpoint. Both are well worth doing. Be aware of the altitude - strong sun and you might just begin to notice less oxygen in the air. Don't be fooled by conditions lower down - have a warm jacket in case of cold winds - even on a sunny day. A wonderful experience. The chairlift staff are really good.

Beautiful, much photographed volcano, which dominates the Lake Llanquihue area. The drive to Osorno is beautiful as well.

If you have a car, drive on Hwy 225 east from Puerto Varas. Turn North (left) on Hwy U-99. (If you go straight on 225 you go to Petrohue Falls). In a short while turn NE (right) onto Hwy V-555 that heads up the volcano. The drive is spectacular. Halfway up we stopped at a scenic overlook and a zorro gris (grey fox) sauntered by. When you get to the top you can walk around at base of the ski lift with beautiful views. You can also walk to the base of the second ski lift. You can also ride one or both of the ski lifts up to higher points. The views of Lake Llanquihue on one side and the Andes Mtns on the other side are amazing. There is a cafe at the base of the first ski lift.

This imposing volcano with its snow capped peak reminds one of Mount Fuji in Japan.
The Osorno volcano dominates the lake and is a photographers dream. It has become one the most photographed sights in the whole of South America. Needless to say this is a must visit place when staying in Puerto Montt.

We booked a tour through Holland America that included a cruise on Lake Todos los Santos and lunch in Puerto Varas on Lake Llanquihue. Since the Osorno Volcano lies between these two lakes and it was a beautiful clear day, we had great views almost all day.
Osorno is one of the most active volcanoes of the southern Chilean Andes, with 11 historical eruptions recorded between 1575 and 1869. The basalt and andesite lava flows generated during these eruptions reached both Llanquihue and Todos los Santos Lakes.
The volcano would probably be disappointing in bad weather but it was magnificent on the day that we did our tour.

We stopped along the road to look across the lake towards the Osorno Volcano.
It was cloudy, but the dramatic sight of the volcano was not completely lost in the clouds.
If you are able, at least go to view the mountain.

Hola.

Saludos y disfruten
