A place worth visiting, a beautiful, humid forest, where you can connect, a gift for the soul. Very easy to get to, from Puerto Montt you can go on a mini bus that leaves the terminal, leaves you at a stop where you can call an Uber, which arrives quickly, charges you cheap, and you are already in the park. You have to arrive early to enjoy the walks.

Beautiful place, well maintained, friendly park rangers, good trails. Very safe place. Close to P Montt, with a road in good condition (only 7 km of gravel, but good). Foxes and foxes on the side of the roads, chucaos singing tirelessly. It's worth it.

As the title says, this national park is less crowded than its famous neighboor Vicente Perez Rosales. Also important, this park does have as much area that is volcanic rock. Wildlife is very abundant, even by the national park office two foxes were meandering without worrying too much about human beings

Beautiful national park with excellent infrastructure and a temperate rainforest that fills you with life. Only Sector Chaicas is enabled! The entrance through current/lake chapo is cut off, a bridge has fallen and prevents traffic to the trails. We were greeted by Don Omar, a very kind park ranger who kindly offered us the La Ruta de Los Parques Passport, in addition to giving us a welcome talk and introducing us to Pepito and Pepita. A pair of Chilla Foxes, both come from rehabilitation centers so they are very accustomed to the presence of humans. (Please do not feed and respect their animal behavior)

Parque Nacional Alerce Andino is a really beautiful place to visit while in Chilean Patagonia. I went on a group tour which was fine but a little expensive for what it was. I chose that option because it is difficult to get there by regular bus, as the stop is not close to the park itself and requires a long walk in or catching a ride. Having your own vehicle would be the best option. The park itself is quite large, has really nice trails, is well maintained, and is home to the world's tallest tree. It's a lovely place to spend the day.

The Parque Nacional Alerce is a lovely place to hike and see these famous trees. As others have noted, there are two access points for the Park – from the north to go to Sector Correntoso and from the southwest to go to Sector Chaicas. If you want to see groves of the Alerce trees, access the north (also to see Lago Chapo). If you want to see the millennial alerce (very old tree) and the waterfall, go to the southwest entrance. We entered the park at the southwest access. Information on how to get to this park was minimal (at least in Puerto Varas), however it is well signed once you leave Puerto Montt. From Puerto Montt, take highway 7 out of the city to the east. This highway follows the coast, comes inland slightly to circumvent a bay, and a short distance from the city, you will come to a junction – signs will indicate Lago Chapo to the left or Alerce National Park straight ahead. Go to the left if you want to access the northern part of the Alerce National Park. We went to the southern route, which stays on Highway 7, and continues right along the coast. The road is a good road, paved. When you come to the town of Lenca, there will be a sign indicating Parque Nacional Alerce to the left. Turn here. You will be on a gravel road, for over 7 km, to the park entrance. The gravel road is a bumpy, but reasonably good road, single lane for the most of the distance, if driven at a speed of 10 to 20 km/hr. It will need a patient driver, to avoid bottoming out the rental car. The weather was wonderful when we traveled, so not sure about rainy or wintry conditions. The Park entrance is after the camping area, has bathrooms, picnic table, and information about the park. Several bridges over streams have been reconstructed. There are several hikes that start at the entrance, several maps posted on these hikes. The hike to the millennial tree starts on what might have been an old timber road, following a stream. There are occasional benches along the way. Lots of birds.

This national park is a nice option from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas, though for a day trip you need a tour or your own vehicle. There is a 3,000-year-old alerce tree that is easy to reach but don't expect to see more unless you venture deep into the park, for which you would need to camp there. Also, this place is very hard to reach by public transport, the bus from Puerto Montt leaves you past Lenca where the road to the park entrance starts, but it is a 7-km hike to the actual park, so if you want to do that, you should stay and camp.

To walk through the forests of the Alerce Andino National Reserve, by old traces and paths barely visibles, under giant trees of thousand years, listening the echoes of a shy bird called Cucao, and hearing the far roaring of a waterfall hidden in the middle of the last reminiscence of glacial forests from 50.000 years old, is the most stunning experience that you can feel in the south of Chile.
When I go deep into the Alerce National Reserve, I feel like the time was stopped in this place. Life crowd around and it is overwhelming: the smell of mustiness of ancient rotten woods and vegetation gets inside my genetic memories, the sence of walk over a layer of soft moss, and finally the awkward moment when I realize that we are all tourists in the wild Nature, we left her a long time ago and now we cannot come back.
About the National Park, It have two access or entries. Both have special sites for camping, with sanitary service and the tracks and paths are well manteined almos the whole year. Of course is recomended to visit the Alerce National Park at spring and summer seasons, even at the first weeks of autumm (October-April).

This park has well-maintained trails and good signage. Worth a visit. But unless you have a car and speak Spanish, you need to book through an agency. We had the luck to find BirdsChile, who sent us Carlo. What a terrific guide. He drove us on a wonderful birdwatching tour along the coast south of Puerto Varas and then hiking in Alerce Andino park. He knew the flora and fauna, geology and local native culture and satisfied our endless questions. He did not hurry us when we wanted to examine closely a crazily made spiderweb or photograph a flower. The hike to the falls and to see the 3,000 year old Alerce tree was a highlight. We didn't sight the Magellanic woodpecker or wire-tail but the sighting of the huala (grebe) and the flightless steamer ducks made my day!

I really wasn't sure what to expect beyond a pretty forest hike based on the reviews - but on the main hike you will see one pretty and one AMAZING laguna, a waterfall, a huge tree, and a hobbit like forest trail. My advice if you are day hiking, go to the main entrance (dirt roads, be ready), and do the full hike to the second laguna (can't remember the name)- it's beauty is comparable to something you'd see in Yosemite or better! The hike roundtrip is about 12 miles and pretty difficult (read, lots of mud and roots) - but fun if you like a challenge. Go early so you can spend lunch there and have time to enjoy and hike back. They close the gates at 6ish, so make sure you are back in time to get your car.
