This expansive, tree-lined square is like most center city locations except for the mountain views in the background. The Plaza's feature is an enormous fountain. It's a good place for people watching. The Cathedral faces the plaza and was completed in 1870. Be sure to visit the impressive 8 block long market nearby for an assortment of all kinds of goods.

I was a little disappointed with this Plaza De Armas, it looks a little forgotten. Having said this there is an area that is boarded up, hopefully some work being carried out here, to improve the look of the Plaza.
The is a fantastic view of the Cathedral from the Plaza.

This was listed on our tour map as a thing to see whilst in town. A very imposing building with great architecture.

On our cruise ship shore excursion, we made a very brief stop at Puerto Montt's main square, brief because it looked like a war zone.

Approaching the square, we noticed that most buildings were either boarded up or had every window broken. We couldn't see the main attraction adjoining the square, Iglesia Catedral de Nuestra Senora del Carmen (Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), because it was completely boarded up. Our guide explained that there were ongoing civil disturbances caused by a dispute over Chile's constitution.

TRAVEL MOMENT:

* As we pulled up to Plaza de Armas, our guide announced that we wouldn't be getting out because of civil disturbances. Then she got a phone call, turned to us and announced that we wouldn't be seeing Osomo Volcano or Petrohue Falls because overnight rain had caused a mudslide, blocking the road. Trying to figure out how to entertain us for the next several hours, the guide took us to Teatro del Lago, a beautiful theater on Lake Llanquihue. The theater doors were locked. Wasn't funny at the time, but it is now!

Plaza de Amas with its bronze statues, monuments and busts of early German settlers provides visitors a great reminder of their contributions to the city's and area's developments. It is nice to stroll along the broadwalk and view the architectural designs of the lovely buildings and the surrounding hills.

This is the place where we saw the most damage outside of the Santiago region--graffiti on walls, broken windows, boarded up churches and office buildings. Also, there was a protest brewing so we left quickly.

I am wondering why this is listed as an attraction. You are in the front of the cathedral. And at the waterfront. One monument in remembrance for the German immigrants. That it is.

It is just a short walk away from the shore, and is worth going to see all the visitors and locals. It is a comfortable place to sit or stand. There seems to be plenty of activities going on. It is easily within walking distance of restaurants, hotels, and shops.

This is your typical tow square, located very close to the port and the board walk, with an very helpful information center across the street, benches to sit, places to eat and drink around!
