When our cruise ship shore excursion couldn't reach Osomo Volcano and Petrohue Falls because of washed-out roads, we spent most of the day driving around this massive lake, Chile's second-largest, looking for things to do.
The big attraction, of course, is the beautiful views of Osomo Volcano across the lake. The clouds that washed out our trip sadly washed out that view as well.
We went to see Teatro del Lago, a beautiful theater right on the lake but, alas, the rains seem to have washed away whoever was supposed to unlock the doors that day. We stood outside for a while and moved on (see my review, "Mistake on the lake").
The highlight of the day? Cerveceria 860, a brewery we weren't supposed to stop at, delighted me, but only after I went to its restroom (see my review, "Don't use the restrooms, marvel at them").

We spent almost a day driving around the lake and discovered a stunningly beautiful part of chile. The view is constantly changing: mountains, volcanoes, lake, forests, green meadows, gently rolling hills and charming little towns like german influenced Frutillar or Puerto Octay. A must do when you are in the area.

Large lake in Chile. Lots of places to swim, kayak, boat, etc. Puerto Varas is the biggest town on the lake, an excellent place to stay to access all Lago Llanquihue has to offer!

We spent the day in Puerto Varas and then drove around the Lago Llanquihue. As one reviewer pointed out, the lake is exceptionally large...but has amazing views regardless of what side one is on. Obviously, the view with the volcano is the most popular, but there are also pretty little houses all along the lake and of course Puerto Varas is a beautiful little town. Definitely worth the time and effort to drive at least part way around the lake. The scenery is terrific.

The Llanquihue Lake has a number of historic towns on its shores. We drove most of the way around it and saw Puerto Octay, Frutillar, Puerto Varas and Ensenada.
There are great views of Osorno Volcano from different angles around the lake.
My husband tried a spot of fishing on the lake but didn’t catch anything. There are a few beaches around different spots in the lake also and the water was not too cold in summer.

We were told that this is the 2nd largest lake in South America. There are many vacation rentals available amidst lovely rolling farmlands and Puerto Varas is a delightful town with a German heritage. It is obviously a popular vacation spot!

We stayed right on the lake near Puerto Varas. Thankfully the weather was clear the evening we arrived and we could see Osorno and the other volcanoes very clearly. It was cloudy and raining the next two days. You could not see even across the lake. We went to Frutillar and visited the German Heritage museum which was nice.

Lake Llanqihue is the second largest lake in Chile (860 km2) situated in the southern Los Lagos Region. Its main affluents are Blanco, Pescado and Tepú rivers and the only effluent is the Maullín river. The lake has a fan-like form because of successive piedmont glaciers.
The lake´s spectacular views of the the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes make the surrounding cities/towns Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Puerto Octay and Llanquihue great tourist "must see" spots. Also a must are Ensenada and Las Cascadas spas.
This lake was discovered by the first Governor of Chile, Pedro de Valdivia in 1552.
You may rent a car or hire a tour.
There are few bathroom facilities, therefore you need to go to a restaurant (but you have to eat there)

First impressions always count and when we first glimpsed this gorgeous lake it was the sheer size and volume of water that took us by surprise. In fact it reminded us of an inland sea or perhaps of the Lakes district in Italy albeit much, much larger!
That description only fits so far because as we drove the entire lake circuit the iconic Osorno Volcano makes its presence felt just about everywhere you look. We have seen Mt Fuji with its lake however; Llanquihue has the most stunning surroundings including a backdrop of rolling farmlands and cute little towns before the rise of the Andes on the far eastern side of this lake.
Our drive started in Puerto Varas, the most touristy town on the lake then continued on a brief freeway that evens out to a less busy road to the German heritage town of Fruitillar. Here the quietly lapping water beckons summer holiday makers and has a bit of a resort feel - without the high rises!
The drive veers away from the lake here enroute to Puerto Octay and where the roads get a little bumpy. It was worth it though as there is a magnificent lookout here the shows the higher northern aspect of the lake. Although this town is small, it has a Bavarian flair surrounded by dairy fields.
As we got closer to Ensenada the forests appeared very close to the lakeshore.Further on you can divert to Osorno National Park or continue along the main route of the lake.Once again we were back in the heart of the tourist throng amongst the roadside souvenir stalls and a couple of interesting restaurants.
We allowed several hours to include the lake circuit, the National Park and some time at each well-known town or area along the drive. However, we had to slow down on the road we used between Frutillar and Puerto Octay - inland slightly through dairy farms. Nonetheless, it’s a spectacular way to see Llanquihue particularly if it’s a fine day.
Enjoy your experience!

Well, we were able to get up every morning and view this lake Lianqulhue and eat most of our meal looking at it and the volcanoes as a back drop! On our last day there at our hotel we were even treated to a beautiful rainbow, it was amazing!
We had a car so on our first day in the area we dove completely around this lake, it was fun to see the farms and the different landscapes.
We highly recommend a drive around the lake.

If we arrive at Puerto Varas by air (and do not want to rent a car), are there tour boats and/or tour buses that offer excursions around the lake and other points of interest?
Thanks,
Jennifer
Written July 2, 2016
Yes, there are. You would arrive at Puerto Montt Airport and get transportation to Puerto Varas. You can check with your hotel if they arrange for airport pickups. We rented a car and were really happy to have it. More freedom that way.
