Interesting walking around looking at various kinds of graves

Seeing how different societies bury their dead can be interesting. Here, there are many fancy crypts above ground as well as simple horizontal graves in a wall of graves.

Unlike other large cemeteries in South America this one is not well maintained and the gravestones are not as impressive. Nice to visit if you don't have much else to do.

This is by far the biggest cemetary we ever went to. There is more than 3.000.000 people buried and the area corresponds to 117 soccerfields. There are a lot of beautifull tombs and graves, but also a lot of areas are worn down. It is more of a city of the dead than a cemetary, with cars driving between the... More

My wife, my daughter, my grandchild and I visited the General Cemetery in January 2017. Is is located on Metro Line 2 on the North side of Santiago and you get off the Metro at the Cemeteries station and the General Cemetery is right there. There is no admission fee. It is necessary to get a map at the office... More

The monopoly of the Pinochet dictatorship on this huge burial site has been broken. Opponents to the regime like Jara, Parra, Allende and so many who disappeared got the place they deserved, be it long after they died. One gets a feeling of justice finally being done when walking around at the cemetery. Good Chileans honor their dead with flowers... More

For Europeans the idea of a city to celebrate life and death is anathema. But trust me you will be surprised. So OK this is not the Ricoleta cemetery in Buenos Aires but it is fascinating but you must take a guide. The entrance buildings are impressive but once inside you see and experience a labyrinth of streets with some... More

It is a cemetery and it will only make sense if you have a guide. I wouldn't go out of my way if you have seen a mausoleum.

While not the ordinary or everyday visitor experience, a cemetery offers powerful and unique insights into a society's perspectives on life and death, religion and politics, as well as celebratory and mournful passion. Having visited notable cemeteries in North America and Europe this location was fascinating and unlike any other I had viewed. Besides its enormous size and scope it... More

What could be more beautiful than a place which celebrates life ( and death). Great monuments, sad, touching, glorious. Must visit place for Santiago.
