The Central Post Office in Plaza de Armas has been remodelled three times. It was originally Pedro de Valdivia's private home and served as the Presidential Palace until 1846. Construction of the current building was started by Ricardo Brownbegan in 1881 and continued by Architect Ramón Fehrman, adding the neoclassical facade, a third floor, and the elaborate glass cupola, finishing remodelled in 1908,
The facade is symmetrical and harmonizes well with the other historical buildings in Arms Square, such as the adjacent Palacio de la Real Audiencia de Santiago.
The Central Post Office is still a working post office where postcards can be mailed. It also has an interesting postal museum that features thousands of stamps from all over the world.
TIP: Check out the English Black penny stamp, the first stamp in the world.

Post office and it’s a working post office too.
Classic building. Beautiful and historical. On the plaza de armas.
Helpful staff for those of us with weak Spanish. I searched everywhere for postcards and found them literally in front. Stamps inside.

There is a little official cart in front of the Post Office where you can quickly buy stamps. Then you just drop your mail in the boxes attached to big iron gates.....Very easy, quick too!

The Central Post Office building, is an historic building on the edge of the square, Plaza de Armas. Construction of the current building started in 1881, changes to the facade have been seen over the years and the current one dates from 1908. Worth a visit if your into stamps; as inside is an amazing exhibition of stamps from around the world This is a working post office building, but also contains an interesting postal museum.

This museum is in the main post office on the Plaza de Armas. It is free and just through the lobby. There are several rooms showing the history of the postal service in Chile and the role of Chile in the world postal organization, as well as a nice collection of foreign stamps. If you enjoy philately, don't miss this free museum!

A must see if you're into stamps. They have a beautiful exhibition of stamps from all over the world. They also have one of the rarest and first ever stamps on display which is the Black Penny. A must see if you're in the central of Santiago!

Located in the mainsquare, nect to the Cathedral, the building is rather nice to look at from the outside, adn has a nice interior also. It has a small museum, containing many world stamps, and artifacts from history of postage, and is still a working post office.

Popped in looking to buy stamps and a lovely staff man pointed to the museum. He asked where we were from and showed us the large collection of stamps they have from all around the world. He said he didn't have Scottish stamps just GB ones, but we were delighted to be able to show him that amongst the collection they dud have a Scottish one as it has the Lion Rampart in the corner. He also showed us the very first Chilean Stamp and a Penny Black they have. There is also a good selection of Chilean stamps including those from Easter Island. There is also a large display of a Princess Diana stamps from around the world. My Spanish is not good enough to work out why.
As for buying stamps, you don't get them at the main counter you get them in a little office just inside the front door where they only take cash but have a big selection to pick from. We were looking for A First Day Cover but couldn't get that across in our pigeon Spanish, we will try again.
The architecture is also pretty impressive.
A nice way to spend 30 minutes or so.

Lovely old building which is still used as a post office. Small museum exhibiting all things postal from the past - stamps, fax machine, furniture, uniforms etc.
