I never, ever thought I would be in Valparaiso, Chile, let alone to be able to ride on one of these city elevators! I have seen them on travel programs about Chile throughout the years and then suddenly I was actually riding on one of them! (I had been on a similar one in Los Angeles, California, USA, in the late 1950s with my parents. This was a trip down memory lane for me.) This activity was fun and highly recommended to everyone.

Easy way to travel to the top of one of the most beautiful of Valparaíso's hills. One of the few remaining funiculars of the city, you cannot say you have been to Valpraíso until you travel by "ascensor."

The houses and artwork everywhere is almost too much to take in during a short walk. But try as it is worth it to climb the streets and use the wooden elevators

100 pesos (about USD $0.15) to ride up or down, per person. A bit rickety but lots of charm. Was good fun. Short ride, frequent service. Nice views.

This is a lovely way to access the higher parts of Valpariso. This, and others, are cheap paying when you get off. They provide good views. Sometimes still nice to walk up as it's good exercise. Other times walking is essential when standing behind large groups of tourists from cruise ships.

Just getting to the entrance of this funicular is interesting. For next to nothing, you are rewarded with a fun ride to the promontory of the Yugoslavo Walk, an interesting neighborhood with an expansive view of the city and its harbor. We walked the nearby neighborhood really enjoying the street art but did not have enough time to visit the Art Museum nor maybe have a coffee at the little café overlooking the city. Give yourself that time and I am sure you will enjoy this area even more.

This is a lift that takes one from the central square at the base to the top of the hill, giving easy access to Cerro Alegre. Ticket is very cheap and it is a practical way to get to the top of the steep hill in quick time, without any physical exertion. If one wishes, can certainly ride in this lift back to the base. Spectacular views are on offer on this short ride. Certainly would very highly recommend taking the same to any traveler.

Perfect for accessing waterfront from this part of Cerro Alegre. Moderate charge which pay as exit or enter at the bottom. Over 2 days, had minimal wait at various times used.

This basically a small elevator/train that takes you from the plaza up to the upper historic district. If you are in Valparaiso, you have to ride it just to say you did. Its cheap too, only a hundred pesos, which is like 15 cents.

Using the ascensors are the best way to get around this city of many very steep hills. El Peral is one of the most central ones. It is very well maintained, with an efficient service and very cheap. They do not run all night so check the timetables.
A great way to get spectacular views of the city.
