Pululahua is a secluded and quiet space near the city of Quito. It is the only protected area in the country that has the category of “Geobotanical Reserve”. It is very quiet to travel with the family and enjoy the landscape. The bad thing is that they do not accept entry with pets.

You have to be lucky to see this sight. The clouds in Quito are unpredictable. We had to provide a passport number and enter. They have restrooms onsite. We walked to the lookout point it was covered in mist. We then walked towards the lower point and there was little clearing. You could see green vegetation and birds.

We read an advertising while having a morocho empanada at La Mitad del Mundo city.
Was a wonderful experience. Car took us to the mouth of this volcano. There is a small village that was established almost 1000 years ago. Its a must see.

My Ecuadorian friend who lived and worked in the USA, returned to Ecuador and bought this site, which he developed into the Reserve that it is today. There is wild coffee growing there, which he has harvested and sells to visitors. Also he has lodging available for visitors. Check it out. You can rent horses to ride also.

Had a private driver take us there....she tipped the parking lot guy and told him I was a senior so had to go closer...ha....made me feel old! They ask your age where they want you to register...and where you're from. Nice little walk past a souvenir shop and the lookout area has great views of the crater...where people actually live...chose not to hike around...but enjoyed watching children ride horses and enjoy being there. Not as breathtaking as some of the other volcanoes we stopped at later on, on our tour.

The Pululahua Volcano area was beautiful, peaceful and very interesting. It was rainy and the crater was filled clouds, but they rolled out enough for us to get a teeny tiny glimpse of the bottom farmlands. There are small shops where you can purchase trinkets and souvenirs. Shopkeepers are not pushy. Bathroom has no toilet paper inside, but there is a dispenser outside of the bathrooms.

With a little patience, it is worth the time and money to ride the cable car to the top, hike around the top and have a coffee at the cafe. The views and experience are amazing.

We did a day tour from Quito to Pululahua Volcano, Intinan Solar Museum and Mitad del Mundo. Our Hotel Casa Joaquin suggested this tour and arranged an english speaking Taxi Driver/Tour Guide Xavier Olmos.
xavierolmos2@yahoo.com +593(0)995 036 252
Xavier was the 'absolute best' and made our entire day so enjoyable and informative.
Our first stop was Pululahua where we only needed to show our passports and Xavier gave us the option of enjoying the scenic view from the lookout area or hiking down into the crater.
We chose the latter and though it was steep in parts and I struggled a little on the way back due to the altitude it was well and truly worth it. There were not many tourists here which made it even more mystical.
We passed a local Peruvian lady who lives there who put us to shame walking up and back down carrying her goods on her back and not even looking a little out of breath.
Xavier informed us about the beautiful flora and fauna along the way including medicinal plants used by the Incas as well as the life of the few remaining elderly inhabitants inside the fertile crater. The bromeliads and many species of orchids were stunning. The whole area is so luscious and green.
This is a real Peaceful Paradise .
We came here early morning and by the time we left around midday the clouds had rolled in and we were surrounded by them. It was quite an experience.
Thank-you Xavier for being so accomodating and walking with us into the crater. We appreciate your passion and all the information you shared with us about your beautiful city.

We visited the geobotanical reserve as part of our day tour. The scenery was fantastic. Around 140 families live in the crater. We saw orchids, bromeliads, native flowers. The path down the mountain was slippery (even with our trekking shoes). We took some pictures, had fresh sugarcane juice for $1 and continued on with our trip.

The most unique volcano world-wide. It is gorgeous and the viewpoints are spectacular. Easy to reach for those who have accessibility issues. New and clean support areas. A Must See.

What is the elevation at the Reserve?
Written October 31, 2019
Is it possible to visit the volcano without going to mitad del mundo? I was planning on taking a taxi from the airport, but do I need to reserve a “tour”? Thanks.

Yes, you can go to the crater without going to the Mitad del Minsk. It’s entirely separate. There’s no charge but you have to register at the gate. Well worth a visit and no need to book a tour. You can just do it by taxi.

Apologies for the delay in the reply. Inside La Mitad del Mundo, one of the restaurants offers the tour. A driver takes you to the site, which is like 15 minutes by car. Very close from La Mitad del Mundo. The driver will take you back to the restaurant.
