    Amazing gilded interior
This church has a very ornate exterior - it is made out of carved lava rock. But it’s the interior that is really impressive, as every service is covered with gold leaf in ornate patterns with a Baroque style and Spanish/Moorish influences. Unfortunately, no photos are allowed inside the church. There’s a $5 entrance fee that is worth it to see this beautiful church.

    Wonderful exterior, gold interior!
I loved this church: it shows all the opulence of the catholic faith in a very good way. I was mainly drawn from the exterior that is so different from the surrounding churches (and I love the exterior even more than the interior) I was a bit disappointed because you are not allowed to take pictures (but I had to sneak one, sorry!) but the church is amazingly glorious with the gold gleaming in the sun coming from the top windows. Of course you just wonder around taking everything in and I find it relaxing not to have to focus on unmissable art (like the churches in Italy) and just enjoy your surroundings.

The jewel In the Crown of Quito
One of the most beautiful churches I saw (and I saw many of them in Italy, France, Russia, Ect.). Amazing interior gold decoration (they don't allow to take pictures). The exterior is also richly ornamented. Glory of the "Spanish occupation".

    Beautiful, worth a visit
The church is very beautiful. I went in July 2024 and some things have changed. It used to be that the first Sunday of the month was free admission, but now the first Sunday of the month is half price. Currently the regular admission fee is $6. Also, when I entered the girl who works at the desk told me that we can take photographs without flash. That is a big change from before when they did not permit any photographs at all. There is a short free tour available... Just ask at the desk when you pay. You can have a guide that speaks English or Spanish.

Worth the Entrance Fee. Truly Unique
I’ve seen a lot of churches and they tend to blend together, with few stand out exceptions. So I wasn’t expecting much more than the usual - pews, lots of stain glass, altar, mini altars, weird looking dolls at altars, long aisle, pulpit etc etc Boy was I surprised! This is one of the exceptions-a truly beautiful and unique church. The decorative gold throughout along with an over the top elegance had me in awe. You can take photos. Admission is $6- well worth the price. Better than the Basilica!

It was shocking to view the incredible amount of gold and European style art displayed in this Jesuit Church, amassed at the expense of the poor when the Spanish arrived. By taking gold and land from past Indigenous peoples of Ecuador and the Inca, this church as built. 6000 years ago, the Indigenous tribes of Ecuador already understood the working of the sun and they knew they lived in the middle of the Earth. They also knew the earth was not flat. But guns, germs and steel changed all of that in the 1500’s when Spain invaded, in search of gold, land and other minerals. The Christian religion was forced upon the people who lived there, with missionaries promising the people would go to hell if they did not adopt the supposed superior Christian beliefs and culture. I could not stay in this church, looking at its blazen display of gold and as well as pictures of hell and heaven, used to force the illiterate (in Spanish) people into visually understanding the supposed consequences of not complying. Fear of hell was a powerful way to control. Of course, there is no hell, in Indigenous belief cultures, as hell only exists in the Christian religion. Control of the people and ownership of land, gold and other wealth by the Catholic Church is reinforced everywhere. I felt thankful to Simon Bolivar for his campaign to free South American people from the Spanish. This Jesuit Order even charged an admission fee to view this opulent place. It is the same as Catholic Carhedrals all over the world, so nothing new. The pre-Columbian (pre-Spanish) museum is much more interesting and informative to understand this country and its citizens.

BEWARE…. I don’t mind at all paying to enter churches or historic sites, but it seems like a bait and switch tourist trap at this church. There is a sign outside with small print that says $2.50 for adults. A guard let’s you through a gate to a payment area and when you get there they tell you is $5.00 for adults! Then YOU CAN’T LEAVE without a payment receipt (they won’t let you back out of the gate without a printed receipt!) We ended up going inside, and then two employees accosted us saying that photos are not allowed (a polite …”sorry no photos” would have been sufficient but their rudeness in a church seemed odd …and the no photo policy was not made clear with signage). When we went outside, I did see that there was a small, faded camera image with a slash through it. The church is pretty inside, but you can’t help think of the blood money and looting that acquired the gold in the 16th century during the Spanish colonization. I guess I should have thought of it before… but I only realized it when I read the signage inside the church about the founding. I went to a Jesuit university, and I know the Jesuits have done many good things more recently (post-colonization), but this tourist trap approach to what should be a sacred place is a blemish.

It was so unclear how to get to the entrance of this place. It was frustrating walking around the perimeter, not finding the entrance. When we realized it was at a gated area, there was no signage or instructions. We did not realize there was a payment to go inside, and we simply followed some others going in as the gate opened.

I asked a guard working inside if pictures were allowed, and he said 'yes.' I started taking non-flash pictures, and then got a rude response from staff that it was not allowed.

At this point we were just annoyed, and wanted to leave. So we did. Then the guy at the exit gate is requesting payment/proof of payment, which we did not have.

My advice is to skip this place. If you have to pay to enter a church, you should at least be able to take pictures. Save your time for the other churches that do.

Summary of my experience with Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania = FAIL!

…make it this one. We took a full day tour of Quito and stopped inside three churches. This was the best of the three and one of the better churches that we have seen anywhere in South America. What sets this one apart from the rest is the intricate gold leaf that covers the interior from floor to ceiling. I would recommend going with a guide who can tell you more about the history.

This is a church like no other! The inside is covered in gold (paint and leaf) and has intricate carvings, statues and minute details to gaze at for hours. Take a guided tour to get the history and stories behind the building and architecture of this gorgeous church. The location was actually chosen to experience the spring equinox: as the sun passes and hits each window, it goes dark inside and certain things are spot-lighted as the sun passes over. I would love to go back to experience that sometime. Entrance fee is $3 USD. No photographs are allowed inside. Don't miss this one!

Iglesia de la Compania is considered the most beautiful church in South America. It is certainly the one having the most golden decorations I have ever seen in my numerous trips. For people who love baroque architectural style is an absolute marvel, so richly decorated it would be hard to find an empty spot anywhere inside. While in Quito it is a must to visit it.

This church is unlike any we have ever entered. The interior is covered in gold leaf and it creates an incredibly dramatic experience. I would have loved to have taken a picture inside, but we were forbidden to do so and I did not want our guide to get in trouble. It's worth the visit as I am not certain there is another church like this anywhere else in the world.

Very lavish decor. I found the staff helpful myself, from the woman on the gate to the bloke who sold me the ticket and the 2 security staff who showed me where the steps up to the dome are. (Not at all obvious!) Do think compared to the Basilica del vota nacional this is a bit pricy at $5 in plus $3 to go up to the roof, if you’re on a budget then I’d run with the Basilica

Truly a breathtaking church - explained by an excellent guide: guides are free with the ticket, so take advantage of him/her as they are knowledgeable and the visit is that much more interesting. The only down-side is that while no photos are allowed, none can be had in the form of a book... there are some postcards... but that is less than satisfying. So if you don't have photographic memory....
