This is the Church of the Jesuits located in Old Town, Quito. The real thing here is the inner sanctum of the church which is covered in Gold Leaf. It is very ornate and spectacular. What a job this must have been in it's day. Do not miss this.

Outstanding example of a colonial build. Lots of gold, shiny and telling all the Catholic traditional stories with the brown outfits of the Jesuits as the conduits for the indigenous peoples to see God. Quite intimidating for all even now! Great history! Beautiful !!!

They will provide you with a private tour and you just tip the person out. We never would have known how much gold leaf was incorporated. Well worth it.

The good news is, one can spend a lot of time admiring the ornate decorations inside of the church. The bad news is, taking photos, even without flash, is prohibited.

I'm not a fan of Churches as a tourist attraction, but if you see only one church in Quito, this is the one to see. Classic Baroque style, with gold leaf covering everything. There are students studying English who volunteer as guides and I suggest asking for one. Wally showed us around and was very helpful. You will pay $5/head,... More

This church is magnificent from the outside in. It is a bit over the top by American standards for a church but it is definitely worth a visit. It really was the only church that I wanted to visit because of photos that I have seen. The only aspects of the visit that was disappointed in were the fact that... More

I rarely set foot in a church i made an exception to visit this beautiful church loaded in history and with incredible workmanship at play. If you are a non Ecuadorian you are paying a lot more of $5.00 each which is not bad and it is for a good cause. The entrance gate while unlocked was not opened so... More

If you think the cathedrals of Europe are glitzy, wait until you see this one. The entire interior is very nearly covered in gold leaf. It's a breathtaking place.

Cost was 5 each and an English speaking guide was provided to give just the 2 of us a walking tour. No pictures are allowed inside but they do sell postcards at the back, so get them during the tour as the entrance and the exit are from the front! This church is spectacular inside, all 23 carat gold leaf... More
