Founded and still run by the Franciscans, this is a truly complicated and beautiful church. We attended mass and saw the church in its full brilliance. Might have more ststues, large and small all over and intricately placed in the altar and all around. At...More

The roof of the cathedral is quite unusual. It is over ornately decorated with gruesome depictions of the Crucifixion and martyrdom. The last supper tableau was covered with scaffolding, but is unusual in the fare for the last supper.

Ask about the missing stone. It is a great story. This church is a must see. The intrecite work, the gold, the alters all make this place stunning. One of the best places to view the El Panecillo monument from town as well.

There is much to admire in this church with its architecture and history. And many ways to view church & city. Lots of stairs led to many wonderful vantage points of the city. There is a lovely gift shop and mini-cafe ithin the courtyard.
