Such a peaceful (well it was peaceful at 9,30 am!) square with a nice balance of buildings on the sides (especially il Palacio de Gobierno) and the lovely statue in the middle…all very balanced indeed!!!
I loved the little manicured gardens and the trees that provide a nice shade. A rather grand square in the little old town.

Perfectly safe during the day, lots of police and security presence so just enjoy the views and shops/restaurants. Explained times in the subject of this because we stayed for 4 nights one block from here. Weekend and after 7ish pm when things closed is your cue to migrate elsewhere. Great way to spend an afternoon with tons of restaurant choices and great colonial preserved architecture to see.

A typical Spanish laid out square. Well maintained and pretty. Fair amount of police about to keep the pickpocketers away

Nice focal point and meeting place in the old town of Quito. Lots of activity and people watching. Also plenty of friendly hawkers that are not aggressive in selling their offerings.

While the Plaza itself isn't spectacular it does serve as a focal point for wandering around the district. The tourist information centre is there along with many cafes. While I was there a procession of uniformed soldiers on horseback paraded in front of the Presidential Palace and a military band played. Not sure if this was a one off or happened more often.

I went during the day and felt very safe, there were police on nearly every corner of the plaza and the surrounding area. It is definitely worth checking out not only the plaza but also the historic buildings surrounding it. It's obvious why this entire area is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site.

We sat in the plaza with the old locals resting and watching the world go by for a while. Its a very busy area with lots of hawkers; who do leave you alone once you have told them no.
The central monument is under repair currently and is covered over. Make sure you go into the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Very nice plaza to take in the history of Quito, Ecuador. Everyone should understand the symbolism of the monument and understand how today’s views and actions have permanently defaced the monument
