Resembling a type of small bread (panecillo), this hill makes an excellent observation point over Quito and features La Virgen del Panecillo, a majestic sculpture that can be seen from any location in the city.

I attempted to walk up at 5pm thinking it would be nice to catch the sunset. However, after just 500m’s I witnessed an attempted mugging and police attending to a separate incident. I was then warned by a local family that it was dangerous to...More

Spectacular monument on a nice hill. Take a taxi up then you can walk back down. Great views of volcanoes and of the city from here. Look for the snake on the statue. The symbolism here is a story in itself. Consider the Northern and...More

I presume this gigantic Madonna statue overlooking the old town of Quito was modelled on the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janiero. Unfortunately it falls way short of the glamour of its more famous cousin. It’s quite a long hike up there from...More

You could walk here from your hotel if staying in the old town but its a lot easier in a taxi, just remember its 2800 meters above sea level and oxygen is in short supply.

Grabbed a $3 taxi ride to visit this lovely winged Virgin overlooking the Old City. Had a very sunny day and there was a cool breeze to wander around to snap shots of the city. Paid the $1 admission fee to climb the steps to...More

Fantastic structure at the top of this immense town. Other than the structure and the unbelievable view from the top of the hill there is not an awful lot more to see, use the hop on bus to get here.

I was downtown and this is a symbol so why not going there. It is OK to see the big Virgin. I went upstairs and like it, but could be skipped if you are short of time

My wife and I found it disappointing that so many tourists assume that the walk up to El Panecillo is not safe. All of those commenting say so after taking a bus or taxi. My wife and I love the exercise and while we were...More

The hop on hop off bus tour stops here for 30 minutes which is plenty of time to enjoy the views of the huge city and surrounding mountains and volcanoes.

Definitely not 24 hrs. To be honest the view from the base of the statue is worthwhile.
