Perhaps not obvious due to its size, but it is a chapel, part of the cathedral complex. Completed in 1715 it is probably most well-known to locals for containing the remains of marshal Sucre, hero of the struggle for independence against Spain. The elaborate decoration of the interior of the chapel is exemplary. Note the gate structure immediately after entering.

This church much less resplendently designed and it features far less gold and intricate carvings. Nonetheless is it no less beautiful and by it having many locals inside praying, it has more of local and true atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to see a wedding party gathering outside. We followed them in and watched part of the service in this beautiful building

This structure is adjacent to, and attached to, the 16th century Quito Cathedral, but is generally accessed separately. It is a part of the whole of the Cathedral complex, although it seems more an independent church than an attached chapel, both due to its size and to its importance in the Quiteño imagination.

This is such a unique and beautiful looking church. The interior is mostly decorated with gold, and the outside is very Gothic looking!

There are so many spectacular churches in Quito, but the Sagrario is one of the slightly hidden ones, being tucked in behind the Cathedral. Unlike the Compania de Jesus which is on the same street, this church does not charge an entrance fee and allows photography. It's not quite as spectacular as the fee charging, no photo neighbour, but it's close. There is a lot to see here and some stunning decor and artefacts. Definitely a highlight of Quito

This is my favorite church in Quito! La Compania de Jesus is nice but it is a shame you cannot take photos inside. The ones I took inside El Sagrario turned out lovely. Fine details all around. Not as well known as La Compania or the Basilica but I enjoyed it more.

Not only can you visit this church for free, you can attend noon Mass on weekdays. There will be several street vendors who want you to purchase things as you near the church.
The church is small and has wooden floors. There is a very prominent veneration of Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. That means that several people come to pray for Mary to intercede on their behalf with her son Jesus. The tradition of Guadalupe is from Mexico.

As others have stated, La Iglesia de El Sagrario (Church of the Sanctuary) is often overlooked by the guided tours. I was part of a tour group but spent our free day in Quito walking the streets of Old Town. I came upon El Sagrario and was very impressed by the beauty of this small chapel. Although I did not have time to go inside, I marveled at El Sagrario's exterior features, especially the doorways.
