I was looking forward to the changing of the guard, and a pre-scheduled tour inside. Both were not taking place when we visited in July 2022.

Nobody seemed to know what was going on. Local police told us it was still going on, and information on the internet was unreliable. It took showing up at the designated day/time to find out for sure, which was a 'no.'

I see there is a recent review stating that the changing of the guards has started up again. Hopefully that is true.

The Palace has still not reopened for tours. The changing of the guard now happens on Tuesday at noon and is definitely worth seeing.

This a must for anyone that is visiting Ecuador. I was lucky to go and I don't regret it. You can watch most of its original structure and pass through a richly furnished museum, while an experienced tour guide tells you all you need to know about the history of the Republic. Be sure to schedule the visit beforehand because it's the only way to visit the place.

We wondered around the old historical town, and really enjoyed the architectural design all around, especially the Palacio, with the nice Roman Columns!

We walked by this palace with the guards standing at the doors. I loved their uniforms. We loved how it was set right in the middle of the central area and no fences hiding it.

We unexpectedly visited during the changing of the guard. This was quite the pageantry to witness, with military on display, native dancers, marching bands, and the President himself on the upper balcony - though we did not know right away who it was! The square was packed with spectators and police enjoying the historic event - happens first Monday of the month.

Important structure on Plaza Grande, as it is the seat of the president of Ecuador. Unlike other presidential palaces, this building from 1920 is rather modest in style, with a colonnade and just two storeys with windows and balconies. Inside, perhaps less interesting, rather old fashioned rooms in a formal style. The mural by Guayasamin 'descent of the Amazon' is worth to have a closer look at. It depicts the journey of the first European to navigate the whole length of the Amazon. The fact Francisco de Orellana was not just a brave discoverer, but also a conquistador is given less attention.

Every Monday is the Changing of the Guard in front of this building. It was a pleasant surprise to see the celebration.

Visiting the Presidential Palace was one of the highlights of our visit to Quito. You have to have a reservation which the visitor information desk across the Plaza kindly took care of for us.

Our guide kindly gave us a tour in English and the history in the early galleries is fascinating. We saw a special exhibit of many statues of Mary from the region that was also very interesting as our guide was able to explain the symbolism to us.
