We walked in the square adjacent to City Hall, and thought it was well designed. They did a good job with the roof, which brings out its charm.

A modern building, but blending in well with the historic environment. Completed in 1973 the architects Diego Banderas Vela and Juan Espinoza Páez have taken care not to affect the area too much by for instance designing a prestigious high-rise structure. At the time that was not unusual.

City hall has a tiled roof. The concrete facade shows many windows and the lower floor is rather open and inviting. After dark the building is illuminated. Until 9PM there is a large police presence. In the beginning I thought it was a police station!

The original municipal buildings on the eastern side of the Plaza Grande were demolished in the 1970s and replaced by the Quito City Hall or the Palacio Municipal which continues to serve as the headquarters for the Municipality of Quito.

Palacio Municipal was the former Archbishop's Palace and more commonly called Palacio Arzobispal Centro Comercial. Originally built in 1649 it has since been converted into shops and a food court. The complex fills an entire block just north of Independence Square. Fast food on the ground floor, more substantial meals on the upper floors.
