Our friend took us to this market which is named after the country’s Independence Day. We went up to the second floor and went through an array of stalls that serves fresh- squeezed natural juices. Thereafter, We came to the section that serves local roast pig “hornado”. There were several stalls each displaying an entire freshly roasted pig. We each ordered a serving of hornado that came with “mote” boiled local corn kernels, mash potatoes balls glazed with homemade sauce, and fresh salad mix. We washed down this mouth-watering dish with fresh coconut juice. All in all a great experience to visit a local market and to try local food.

The market hall on calle Larga is not particularly attractive. Functional with two storeys divided by different sections and easily accessible also for suppliers of various kinds of food. This is one of the markets where locals buy enormous amounts of meat: pork, beef, chicken. Though I am not vegetarian, even for me a bit over the top.

However, fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and all kinds of dairy (locally made cheese) are also for sale. Nuts and beans are on the westside of the hall, where there is a bakery as well. The food court on the second floor is rather standard, but offers a huge variety of local dishes.

Overall a very lively place, definitely worth a visit if you want get an idea of the local diet.

The market has everything you could ever need to buy. Fruits, vegetables, meat, staples etc.

On the second floor is the food court where you can get all types of local dishes. We decided to try the delicious looking roasted pork for lunch and it was amazing!! You buy it by the plate ($3.00, $4.00, $5.00). It is served with hominy, potato cakes and salad. I would highly recommend you try it.

A bustling market selling mainly food, initially fresh fruit and veg plus coffee and chocolate......even cows stomach to make cheese with. Obviously for the locals and at the far end there is a foodhall, with locals selling cooked food, whole roasted pigs lay ready to be served up with potatoes and salad, alongside fish, chicken and guinea pig. All looked totally appetising, had a taste of one of the pigs, best pork ever.

Spent an hour wandering and taking it in, wishing it was later than 10am and we hadn't just had a big breakfast!!!

My wife and I visited the 2 biggest farmers markets (9 & 10) and I must say there isn't any type of food that is not found here. If your only experience in the US is grocery store chains this is eye-opening,

Found several good bargains. Wish that I had more time to shop there. Only had a few hours but sure could have made several more purchases. Wonder if anyone has an online store.

Definitely come here for an authentic South American farmer's market experience. There are so many fruit and vegetable choices, as well as meats and cheeses. You will also find all kinds of household items here. Lunch is inexpensive and tasty.
