Arequipa's Centro Historico is extremely photogenic and a unique neighborhood in all of Peru. Here, you feel 100% of the city's Spanish origin, while the rest of Peru's cities, big and small, are experienced as a combination of Spanish and indigenous influences.

You can google free self-guided walks around the historic center, so you'll catch all the most important and beautiful sights. Alltrails dot com is an excellent guide. If you want to give a little tip to a guide, there are also plenty of "free walks around Arequipa."

However, you should leave the center around Plaza del Armas if you want to eat cheaply and well with the locals. Within a 5-10 minute walk from the center, you'll find a wealth of local eateries, for example, on Calle Fransisco Pizarro.

The best examples of the religious architecture of the city of Arequipa range from the Church of Yunahuara of 1750, in mestizo Arequipa style, in ashlar with a baroque facade.

Friends, families come here to enjoy the park. People selling play items for the children. Buy your ice cream just off the square from a street vendor, come here and enjoy.

We spent some time people watching and enjoying the park when we visited Arequipa. Going here gives you a sense of the people and a bit of the history of the place. It is definitely worth taking a stroll around the area when you visit Arequipa

Our only regret is not having stayed here longer. There are so many beautiful colonial-era buildings, restaurants, museums and bars in the historic center. All of them within walking distance and safe (although we did wander a little too far one day and ended up in a strange street with lots of sketchy bars). Just use common sense and don't wander too far off and you will love it.

To stand in the centre of the plaza and experience the aura of this place is amazing

The flora , forna and vibrant colours are spell binding

The people are welcoming and the ponchos in the stalls and shops have every colour you can think of

tranquility in peru a magnificent place to visit various natural and archaeological attractions, the square a safer and cleaner place that we were surprised and that talking about the beaches is a wonder to visit.

The historic section of Arequipa is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site due to the abundance of Spanish colonial buildings as well as several cathedrals and monasteries. Be sure to take a walking tour to see all of them.
