A true market representing the huge variety if produce from the region. I wasn't that keen on seeing the live turtles, but the market holders were lovely.

The first trip after landing in Iquitos was going around in a " tuc- tuc" to Belen (the flood zone of Iquitos in the raining season).Obiously because was December and the water level was low ,We were able to visit the floating houses by foot and no need of renting a boat. It is surprising the way the locals adapt... More

I was fortunate to walk through Belen market with a local. It was dry season, however the market itself is one of the most diverse markets I've seen in the world. As many locals will tell you, just be very aware and sensible if you walk the market without a guide and do flash large cameras, phones, etc.

What I remember the most from my visit to Iquitos, is my visit to the Belen's market. It was my first time (an dprobably last!!) trying the suri (the big larvae), I've seen so many different fish, it was a great visit! A lot of people were telling me not going there because I'm a girl and travelling alone, but... More

Food of every description being sold, if it moves or grows in the Amazon, somebody hunts it, harvests it, eats it or uses it. Great shaman area. Beware of the lower level (currently not floating, cause it is dry season now) people will take advantage of you there.

We visiting Belen as part of a small private tour that operated partially out of Belen. The water was low so didn't experience by boat but really got to see many of the houses and got a good explanation about what happens when waters rise and how the floating houses move. This is a very poor neighbourhood, but I found the... More

Let's be clear, the Belen market is not for the faint of heart, especially on a hot day when the smells can be overpowering, but it's an incredible experience and an assault on the senses. Probably better to go with someone local who knows there way around both from a layout and from a security point of view, but you... More

it is a travelers prospective to look for an exciting place, something different and intriguing! Well Belen offers all that at the expense of the poor neighborhood placed on the banks of Rio Itaya. A guided boat trip is recommended and a walk through the colors of the Belen market is a must!

I went to Belen in september and I have to say it was the most interesting market I've been to. I have seen many crazy things in e.g. Bangkok markets, but this one is top. I don't think it's unsafe place, but as always you need to take care of your things, it's a crowded place, so watch out your... More
