Milaflores is without a doubt the safest and nicest park of the city. You can walk to Barranca in 20-30 minutes along the path at the top of the cliffs. There are some very authentic dining opportunities there but, it can get a bit seedy. We went during the daylight. I would probably only go by taxi at night Milaflores has some great parks, ancient ruins, museums, shopping etc. The real LIMA (rest of Lima) gets fairly poor and run down. You'll get your fill on the ride from the airport (north) into the heart of the city. We spoke no spanish, so there was no way we were going to wander off anywhere. BUT we enjoyed a few days in the Milaflores area, took long half day or more walks, and then returned for several days after going to Cusco and Macchu Pichu. The shopping plaza near the JW Marriott has some okay restaurants AND great sunsets. Pisco sours vary from place to place but ar very tasty.
