It's really beautiful view, along the way you find various stories of sacrifices and rituals. A very nice place where you have a beautiful view of the entire site.

Melinda and the hotel staff took great care of us during our stay.
The hotel is just steps from reataurants, the train station and the bus to Machu Pichu. I was concerned about train noise, but it was never an issue. The noise proof windows worked great. The free breakfast was plentiful and delicious.
They allowed us to keep one of our rooms after check out time so we had a place to rest until it was time for our train. We had a great experience at Inti Punku Hotel and will definitely stay again on our next visit to Machu Pichu!

Karen was so helpful and nice. She made our stay at the hotel so wonderful! The hotel was very nice and comfortable. The breakfast was ready before our hike at 5am and was delicious.

The path up can be slippy if it rains but otherwise easy enough.
Waited for around an hour for clouds to clear & they did for about 2mins, so be ready.

Beautiful place to admire Machupicchu. Excellent view of Machu Picchu. Intipunku or SunGate. It is the point where the Inca Trail ends, and it is the entrance to the Inca citadel in the fifteenth century. You can go with the same ticket as Machu Picchu (without additional fee) and keep in mind that it is a moderate walk that should take 2 hours round trip.

This is one of the splendid views you get on your tour of Machu Picchu, the very steep Andes Mountains and the low valleys. Even on a cloudy day, the perspective is impressive.

Because Machu Picchu visit is organised like an Ikea store, meaning you start at level 1 and finish at ground level and it's all one way. Except that at Ikea you can start again or come back mid-way. Here at Machu Picchu, once you start there is no turning back, there are guards making sure you don't go back, and once you're done, you cannot go back to do the hikes likes Intipuncu, which is why it's important to do it first thing.
If you do it early (before 9am), it's a bit hazy so take your polarised filter for decent photos.
The hike is quick, maybe 1h30 total. It's not hard

Said to provide some of the best views of Machu Picchu the Sun Gate was probably used as a control post for people entering and leaving the city.

This was a heck of a hike up about 60 minutes each way with a 7 year old. We were blessed with nice weather and it was a good day to take this route. The rest of the main citadel was packed with tourists so this was a less busy route to enjoy different views of Machu Picchu.
Such a wonderful opportunity to visit this great site. One of the best views in the entire site. It is worth the trek but on a second visit or when you have extra time. Otherwise go to the peak at Circuit 1.

Hello,
We are pretty much set on doing the hike, but are wondering how to make it work with the tour of the citadel, since I've read many people stating that: 1. you can't walk back once you're moving through a circuit and 2. you have to enter the site with a tour guide on first visit. I would love to do the hike first thing (when I have the most energy) and then tour the citadel, but seeing as I must enter the site with a tour guide, I presume I'll have to tour the citadel first and then do the hike, but will I be able to return to the start of the path to Intipuncu or will my guide have taken me slowly toward the exit, where I won't be able to go back? My apologies if my questions are confusing; I'm just trying to set things straight from the chunks of info I've gathered here and there. Any help is much appreciated!

OK. So what we did was to get a morning ticket AND an afternoon ticket to Machu Picchu. We ate lunch in between at the buffet restaurant just outside the entrance. That way we could go out, get lunch and go to the bathroom, and then come back in for the afternoon. Even at a brisk hike, the trip to the sun gate and the Inca Bridge took most of the morning.
You do not need a guide. He is helpful to get more information, but you do not need one to enter Machu Picchu.
Our guide first took us to the sun gate and the Inca Bridge because the weather was good. And then later took us into the citadel. I would assume that the guide could do either order as long as he knew what you wanted to do. With a guide, he wouldn’t not take you to the exit before you had done the Sungate if you did the citadel first. You are right, the Sungate and the Inca bridge do not funnel you to the exit, and during the tour of the citadel, there are a couple of areas that you can peal off and head back up to the sun gate.

Hello folks, couple of questions about the sun gate hike.
My partner and i are both in our late fourties in good health and we do not own a car so we do a lot of walking but we are certainly NOT experienced mountain hikers.
Given our lack of hiking experience, and after doing some research, we are opting to do the sun gate trek because we are led to believe that this is the easiest.
here are the questions…
1. Is the easiest trek?
2. Are they any better/easier treks than the sun gate?
3. Do you is need a guide for this hike?
Thanks in advance

Hi Stockton,
To get to the sun gate If you get to MachuPicchu by bus/train it's no really a hike, it's just a walk up stairs that will take you less that an hour if you go easy, it's not very hard, specially if you take your own rhythm will be really easy.
