Opened 1856. Greeted at the door by English speaking guides. You must take a tour at specific times to enjoy. We just missed the tour at 16h00 and will definately return to attend.

I wasn't sure you could visit this place and how. But since I had to use the bathroom I walked in and ended up in a beautiful space with an art/costume exhibition. Just great!

at most, a guided tour will cost you 60 Uruguayan pesos and its absolutely worth it to hear the story of the theater's history and gain access to its two theaters. as a bonus, the first tour of the day often features a short live performance by some of the actors from the resident company. do not miss the gallery... My chorus from NYC was invited to perform here in March. It was an absolute dream. This jewel-box theater seats about 1100 and epitomizes late 19th century classical theaters. Acoustics were excellent and the view from the stage and in the house were breathtaking. Tours for the public are given daily, but attend a concert for the full effect of... More

Next to the Plaza Independencia, it is a must-see attraction of Montevideo. There are guided tours in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese (check the website for details). The tour lasts around 30 min and the guides explain about the theatre's foundation, history and architecture. There's also a bookstore next to the ticket office.

I went on a tour of this old theatre-much older than the Teatro Colon in BA which I also visited. It was good to be taken around and to see the main auditorium and the small one too. Sadly no visit behind the scenes.

I took a tour on a Wednesday -- which was fortunate, because there is no charge for tours on Wednesdays. Tours were offered in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. The tour guides were all university students on an internship. The entire tour really made each guest feel welcome, and that your patronage was genuinely appreciated.
