Small museum which houses the remains of the Graf Spee which was a German Battleship during WW2. There are also many videos and artifacts from this time period which describe the Battle of the River Plate in 1939. Many cannons and big guns outside. $22 entrance fee.

Went to see the Graf Spee artifacts like the 150mm gun in front of the museum. They do a good job of explaining the naval Battle of the River Plate (75 years ago next month). The missing bell of the Ajax is back! Or is it a better copy this time. Other artifacts can be seen at the port, across the street from the Mercado de Puerta: anchor and range finder.

Close to the water, and at U$ 20, the museum provides a rest from the sun (or rain) depending. The display of the naval history of Uruguay is interesting, but the key drawing card is the story of the Graf Spee. A large gun, recently salvaged from the wreck, stands outside the building. There are further artifacts from the wreck inside along with a video that tells the story of the engagement and salvage efforts. Probably uninteresting to most, but if you have an interest in the Battle of the River Plate then you really can't miss it.

There is lots of information on the Graf Spee. We were told that they have a tour during certain days. however there was a military gentleman that offered us interesting facts about the Graf Spee. This is a must for history buffs. Parking can be a problem. Take a Uber to get there.

As interested on the history of WW2 and the Graf Spee and battle of the River Plate in 1939 we headed to this small museum by taxi from our hotel in center of Montevideo. There are also buses but they bit complicated to use if you are not goon in Spanish and unfamiliar with the city. There is gun from Graf Spee outside the museum. The place is quite small and the Graf Spee exhibition sponsored by to local German embassy is nearly only special thing to see in the museum. In that room there are text in German and English also. There are photos, models and few artifacts from the Graf Spee. The actual wreck of Graf Spee is nowadays totally under water, so it is not worth to go the harbor to try to see it with binoculars as many foreign tourists try.

Nice place to visit if you like military history or boats in general. The museum is small but have a lot of items and much to say, infortunaly texts are only in spanish. In the outside there is parts of a military boat as a playground that you can see the cabin and use the optics at the see.

This is a small museum, just two or three rooms. a 20 minute cab drive from the cruise ship pier ($30 round trip per cab load). $2 entrance fee. I am an ex-Navy officer, so I like to learn about naval history and they have a fascinating 45 minute/hour long video on the Graf Spee in WWII (1939). It was a German pocket battleship that was hunting supply ships off South America and got into a battle with some British ships. 3 days later it scuttled itself just outside the harbor. The story, the "intrigue" the role of the British ambassador to Uruguay, the crowd and newsreelers that watched, waiting for a battle, is really interesting. If you go, ask for the English version of the story ("Inglés versión del video, por favor") - they do not speak English. Oh, and you can actually touch a piece of its hull.

Museo Naval was very great. Outside among the other items displayed is a deck gun off the Graff Spree. Inside is not a large area, but very well utilized. Items are nice displayed. Even though there is no English labels it is easy to understand what is displayed, There is a number of wonderful models of various ships including models of Christopher Columbus' Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.

Although the sign on the door posted the hours, it was never opened. I am sure it is an interesting place but it needs to update the signs on the door.

Our only reason for visiting this museum was to see the remains they have of the Graf Spee. We arrived during a 2-hour lunch break, so the museum building was closed, but the Graf Spee 150mm gun is mounted outside, as are many other exhibits, and also a playpark for children (which seems popular). There is nothing to see of the Graf Spee itself any more, but from here you can look out into the River Plate Estuary to where it was sunk. True to say, visiting this museum was our main reason for going to Montevideo, as I'm an enthusiast for WW2 museums. Beware - compared to Buenos Aires, taxi fares here are between double and triple the price.

Thanks for your review. Are the exhibits specifically related to the Graf Spee labeled in English?

Where are you located in reference to where the cruise ships dock? Is the German Cemetry anywhere close to the Museum?
Written October 25, 2015
Sorry, I was only visiting from the U.S.A. and was taken their by a friend who lives in Montevideo. I have no idea where the cruise ship's come in or where the German Cemetery is.
