This gate is the last remaining piece of the old wall around Montevideo. It is just an archway with a fairly small bit of stone surrounding it, but overall it is fairly impressive. It's also placed such that it serves as an entryway into the Plaza Indepencia, and it's a fun place to take photos of both the gate/wall itself and the view seen through it. The view towards the square (and you can get Palacio Salvo in the background) was our favorite. This is more of a photo op and sight to walk past and appreciate than a destination, but it was a fun landmark to see as we enjoyed a walk through the city.

Rated very good because of its historical value. It's the "entrance" to Old Town.
It's a spot for a picture and then explore Peatonal Sarandi.
It's a cinderblock wall that is maintained as a landmark.
You have to go see it, but it does not take long.

Just like L'arc de Triumph, Puerta de la Ciudadela is one of the most notable landmarks of the city. It is suitably located on Plaza Independencia and is found in the Old Town area of the city.

A massive stoned wall surrounded the city in defense against the Portuguese and others. Today the Gateway/Entranceway is all that remains and separates the Older town from more recent structures and buildings. Directly at the entrance is the "Plaza Indepencia. Aside from a good selection of restaurants and stores you will find many important historical Buildings, statues, and artifacts in this area of Montevideo.

Like all major colonial settlements, Montevideo was surrounded with a wall. Little is left of the wall around the Ciudad Vieja. This piece is on the western side of Independence Plaza. Most of the wall around the citadel was torn down in 1829.

Inevitably, everybody has to walk through the gate as the connection between the Old and the New City. Nothing special. The old photographs look a lot more interesting.

Puerta de la Ciudadela is one of the few remaining parts of the wall that surrounded the oldest part of the city of Montevideo, the citadel, which was demolished in 1829. It is located by Plaza Independencia, in Ciudad Vieja.

while walking around the old city in Montevideo, you need to stop at the Ciudadela gate. This used to be the entrance to Montevideo City. It's really nice. It's right in front of a nice square and if you take a tour you'll learn a lot of how the city used to be

An historic piece of Uruguay history. This marks the limit of the Original town of Montevideo and you walk through to get to the modern town

From the Independence Plaza side, all you see is a large cinderblock wall which abuts the actual old city gated entrance. Our tour guide said that the wall facing Independence Plaza was the old wall. Only when you get close & look at the other side, you realize that is the old part.
