Bascarsija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center...

Bascarsija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Bascarsija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isakovic founded the town. The word Bascarsija derives from the Turkish language. The word "bas" which is "bas" in Turkish literally means "head", in some contexts however also "primary", "main", "capital" and "carsija" which is "carsi" in Turkish means "bazaar" or "market". Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Bascarsija is half the size that it once was.

Bascarsija is located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, in the municipality of Stari Grad. On Bascarsija there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and sahat-kula. Today Bascarsija is the major tourist attraction of Sarajevo.

Bascarsija is the heart of old Sarajevo. With scores of shops and restaurants, it can easily entertain for an entire day. Historical sites abound, with ruins of a trade-route Han, the restored Ottoman market building, mosques, a 14th century Orthodox church, and the site of the 1914 assassination of Franz Ferdinand, which triggered World War One. Tourist friendly, multi-lingual, and... More

Sitting on the Sebilj steps, watching people strolling around Sebilj, taking photograhs, eating donner... was interesting, especially if the majority of these people were dressed differently and more picturesque than one would expect. A recomend, just sit, put the sunglasses on, observe and listen.

Probably the best place in Sarajevo to see. You can take many pictures and see many things at that little space.

Some might like it - but I find it awful. It looks drity, old, it smells terribly (onions, sheep oil?, whatever - smells badly). I don't feel at ease there, like I might be robbed any time. The picture perfect if you want to see old stone part of the city, with supposedly great mosk, small stone streets, but -... More

The place is very interesting to see with its old buildings, markets and souvenir shops. Ottoman vibe in a small scale. Many places for food and refreshments are available here. It gets really busy in the summer. Many of the best places to eat are actually here.
