Description:

The National Institute of Archaeology with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy...

The National Institute of Archaeology with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences covers the complete study of the culture of tribes and peoples who have occupied present day Bulgaria from the remote past until the 18th century. The Museum of Archaeology hosts the most numerous collections in Bulgaria and its exhibitions reveal it as one of the most important centers in the country for promotion of the cultural heritage of present day Bulgaria. NIAM-BAS was established in 1949 as a follower and successor of the Department of Valuables - part of the Library established in Sofia in 1879 and reformed into a National Museum in 1892 - and the Bulgarian Institute of Archaeology (1921), which was the first academic institute in Bulgaria.

Entrance for adults: 10lev. Lots of concessions. Loved it! It's in what was originally a mosque, as betrayed by the architecture and the bits of decoration visible on the ceiling where the whitewashing over it has come away. Contained in 5 halls, 4 of which are much smaller than the main one, which comprises the ground floor plus gallery, this... More

We went to this museum not expecting much and found it to be much more. The staff was also helpful and friendly.

Nowadays one of the highlights of Sofia. Another must-see or must-visit in town, opposite the presidential palace. Plenty of treasures from all times. Take your time to visit the museum: it's worth it. Gold artefacts, statues of all kinds, everything you can imagine.

Not very impressed with artifacts and descriptions. Expected more display to reflect history of the country.

Have visited the archaeology museum many times and every time amazed at how much one can learn about the past of Bulgaria and Sofia. Last time visited with my kids and also booked a guided tour - well, the guided tour makes everything even more interesting! (bulgarian and english tours available, but call to book in advance). Very knowledgeable guide,... More

A lot of very interesting exhibits within quite a confined space. I found the roman artefacts particularly interesting.

This is a terrific museum, with incredible artefacts from early times. This is in an old mosque. There are lockers for your rucksacks but there are no refreshment facilities so have a drink at the Museum Art Cafe first. This is just round the corner. Don't forget to see the gold in the Treasury. It has the best collection of... More

This was a little difficult to find. A good museum and very reasonable at 10lv for a family of four. Some stunning exhibits.

Until we visited this museum we had no idea of the complex history of Bulgaria. We had not realised the extent of the Roman occupation. We also gained an insight into how modern written Bulgarian language developed.
