The Kyiv History Museum was originally created by order of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of 14 November 1978. The museum funds were based on the items transferred from the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, as well as gifts from various businesses and institutions. The first museum and its funds were initially located in the so-called «House of Peter I» in Podil area. But its premises were too small to host the exhibition, and soon the museum collection was transferred to the Klovskyi Palace in Pechersk. The first exhibition was opened on May 26, 1982 to mark the celebration of 1500th anniversary of Kyiv. At that time, the museum had 36,000 original items, of which only 5-6% were exhibited. Today the museum collection consists of 250,000 exhibits, including archaeological materials found in the city, ethnographic and numismatic collections, a collection of icons, old postcards, household items of Kyiv residents of different times, as well as thematic complexes of the XXth century. On May 26, 2004 Kyiv History Museum exhibits were moved to the Ukrainian House on European Square. Since this area was not spacious enough to accommodate the entire collection of the museum, its foundations were partially moved to the premises of Mikhail Bulgakov Museum and of "the Peter I the Great House». Certain funds were merely stored in the boxes for many years. Finally, on May 27, 2012 the grand opening of the museum premises in the new 4-storey building on 7 Bohdana Khmelnytskoho took place. Its collection was moved within next month and August 24, 2012, the Independence Day of Ukraine Kyiv History museum has finally been reopened in the new premises.

The museum is cosy conveniently located, but it lacks the most important - exposition is too small. You only need 30 minutes to see it all.

Not as good as you'd think. There were some nice artifacts located here. But for the length of the history of Kiev and for what is displayed here I was disappointed. I was expecting much more. And the admission ticket was only for the second floor. I wasn't allowed onto the third floor unless I paid for another ticket. And... More
