Overview
More
Quite often there are memorials on the facades of Kyiv houses as reminiscent of the famous tenants of these houses. But there is one unique house with a record number of such memorials in Kyiv. This house was built for the writers’ cooperative and named in the honour of the group that initiated the building - «Robitnyky Literatury» («Literary Workers»), or RoLit. At various times almost all of the Ukrainian literary classics of the Soviet era lived in this house. On its facade, there are presently 27 plaques in the memory of the writers who lived here. Its construction was accomplished in few stages since the early up to late 30s. Famous "engineers of human souls" needed quality accommodation. So first, the section along Kotsyubynskiy street was built with the traditional appearance of Constructivism (1930-34, arch. Krychevsky, Kostyrko) and later the external section with a more traditional appearance was added (1936-39, arch. Sdobniev).Apart from a considerable amount of writers’, famous Ukrainian composer B.Liatoshinskiy loved here, and there is a memorial plaque dedicated to him as well. In 1970, RoLit house was granted the status of the monument of history. Today, a chapel is planned to be built close to the house in memory of the writers who were killed during the Soviet repressions.

I liked the architecture of this house. It looks cool. I wouldn't mind living here. But I wouldn't make a special trip just to see it.
