We had plans to visit both major locks (Gatun and Mirafores). We visited Gatun on first day. As others point out, you are VERY close to the boats and the locks. It's also not busy being farther from Panama City, so there is lots of room to move around. The observation area is outside but covered from rain. There is... More

The Gatun Lake experience was awesome. We managed to see a few big boats pass by our little boat. The monkeys and birds (eagles) are plenty on the islands and are easily visible from the boat. Bring peanuts and bananas to feed the local wildlife - it will give you great photo opportunities and the "wildlife" is used to it... More

Would not go back, there are many better places to visit while in Panama (I would think) unfortunately I was not able to experience them.

This massive man made lake was built to make the Panama Canal possible. It provides the water that flows into the locks that raise and lower the ships on both sides. It is the only river and lake that flows into both the Caribbean and the Pacific. You will see dozens of ships as you cross, all waiting to enter... More

Gatun Lake is huge. You need to get a private guide, we used Jungle Land, with Capt. Carl Davis at the helm. He took us into the lake, we saw monkeys and had a fantastic lunch at his inland floating home.

I was on Gatun dropping off a friend so got to visit the lake and see the surrounding areas. It's really amazing that the lake is man made BUT I would not be taking that trip just to see the lake. It's a lake... that's all

We went fishing with JungleLand Adventures for peacock bass and had a wonderful time. After fishing, the guide takes you to their floating lodge and Capt. Carl prepares lunch while you relax on the upstairs patio in chairs or hammocks. You may play with his boa (We didn't because we don't like snakes) and check out the toucan. On the... More

I knew that there was a lake within the Panama Canal but I didn't know what to expect. I didn't image the size, the vegetation, the number of other vessels. The water was the colour of the South Pacific. It was much bigger than I imagined and it took hours to transverse. I can't wait to see it again!

Very interesting lake for fresh water fishermen and just lovers of nature. If you can get some fishing charter and most of them fish for rainbow peacock bass. There are plenty of small bass in a lake. But when you hear monkeys in the nearby woods, birds and ocean going ships passing not far from you early in the morning... More
