Worth going on the railway, though steep at $25/single (and no return discount). Interesting to see the landscape that the canal builders had to work through - first the jungle and then the landscape. Arriving in Colon there is nothing at the terminal (and the city is unsafe to walk around). It's a long wait to the return journey. Either... More

We chose to take this trip because we thought it would give us another perspective of the canal. In reality, we only saw the actual canal about half the time we were on this 1 hour 10 minute trip from Panama City to Colon. The rest of the time we could look out and see miles and miles of tall... we did it with myfriendmario.com very informative and nice guy (one of the 3 Mario´s) very good views from Gatun Lock (3 levels !!) Train ride was fun (but not really a >highlight<) - 90% of the time we stood on the (little) open platform. It was our "arrival day" and therefore perfect cheers !

This train travels between Panama City and Colon. From PC in the morning and back from Colon in the early evening. About an hour. Nice views of Lake Gatun and rain forest. Can buy snacks on board. Try to get upstairs in the viewing cars.

FANTASTIC experience. Don't miss it! (Be wary in Colone, however. Locals there were shocked to see us wandering the streets, and very kindly warned us to be very, very careful!)

Interesting to cross from the Atantic to the Pacific without having to spend the money on a cruise to do so.

Very well built and great to see other ships go by and the level of the water go up and down. . Once in a lifetime experience. Seeing all railroad engines so near the water

This Historic train ride goes to the Pacific end of the canal after the partial cruise ship crossing. The train is a restored 1900 original. Very clean with ample legroom and restroom available. Snacks for purchase are carted through the car several times (chips, cookies and drinks). Our excursion included a snack box (cookies, nuts and raisins) and a bottle... More

For a wonderfully relaxing ride to the Gatun Locks take the railway. The cars are comfortable and spacious and the view along the way is simply breath taking.

We bused to Colon and took the train back to San Jose. There were about 15 passengers in the dome car, and not many in the other cars. Most of the trip is through the trees, or along the edges of lakes, so the view is okay but unchanging -- and there weren't many ships moving along the bits of... More
