Great story about keeping the gold from the pirates. Lots of versions and all are interesting even though none ste avtually proven.

The best part is the massive nativity village in the back. Well worth a visit.

The Plaza de la Catedral is located in a beautiful park in the centre of the Old Town. It is in a beautiful and clean location thus making for a great spot to stop-off and enjoy lunch.

Even though the Cathedral is in the process of getting a face-lift, the plaza is comfortable and full of local flavor

The Cathedral is being refurbished and will be marvellous upon completion...so you will miss going inside but the whole feeling of this Square with the Canal Museum,The Central Hotel and the Municipal building plus the refurbished colonial houses is a must in Panama to see and experience the brick paved narrow streets leading to it.

This is somewhat confusing as this Plaza seems to share two names - most maps call it the Plaza de la Independencia (Independence Plaza), and there is a sign in the Plaza to confirm that, but there is also a sign for Plaza de la Catedral - so go figure. And of course, the Metropolitan Cathedral faces it, so "Cathedral Plaza" has some claim to the name. But other reviewers of this attraction have posted photographs of both signs on this page, so there is something in it
Further, the Plaza is reviewed under both names here on TripAdvisor, with photographs of the same rotunda appearing under both reviewed names.
The Metropolitan Cathedral suffers the same fate - reviewed under two headings on TripAdvisor (see also "Cathedral at Old Panama").
Regardless of what it is called, it is a very pleasant plaza, surrounded by interesting buildings and full of colourful locals. There was even a stand selling Panama hats (seemed appropriate!). Aside from the Cathedral, there is the Hotel Central, the Municipal Palace (Palacio Municipal), which houses the Museo de la Historia de Panama, and the Museo del Canal Interoceanico.
We caught a cab here, and asked for "Independence Plaza" - and we were brought to the right place!
Great for photography and people-watching.

We happened to be in the plaza when the University of Panama was doing a presentation of their music and dance departments. It was excellent and a wonderful place for people to gather. Without the special activity that day, the plaza would have just been a nice place to take a rest while exploring Casco Viejo.

No words for the beauty in this old cathedral. From the mother of pearl on the towers, the marble floors, the stained glass windows. Regardless of your religious views or thoughts, this is worth the visit.

The Plaza de la cathedral or Plaza de la independencia (named as it was the place where panama declared its independence from Colombia on November 3rd 1903) is located in the centre of the casco vieja. It features a number of beautifully restored Colonial buildings and the two tourist attractions of the metropolitan cathedral and the Panama Canal museum. You’ll inevitably find yourself here as part of a tour of the casco viejo.

More accurately called the Plaza de la Independencia. This is the heart of the Casco Viejo neighborhood and location of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Canal Museum.
