Free to wander..

If you're in the area and you have some free time, this is a good place to wander and get some eye candy. And it's free!

The Mead Art Museum is housed in a gorgeous spot on the lovely Amherst College campus, a few minutes walk from town center [where tons of restaurants with college prices abound]. The building is a bit hard to find, but a stroll around the campus is a treat in itself. The exhibits are varied with a large center hall being... More

This is a nice museum that is free. There are a few interesting items. The modern art is terrible, though (and I'm usually a fan) and is displayed in an unattractive way.

I have visited the Mead many times and always come away impressed and more than satisfied. There are numerous excellent works of art on display at any given time, and the labels offer concise and interesting information. Temporary exhibits are always on display as well. Of course, you could also extend your visit and stroll the beautiful grounds of Amherst... More

Sadly, the museum is partially closed for renovations. Only a few rooms were open. We did notice in a book describing the collection that the museum has a wonderful and varied collection. Check before visiting.

The modern art collection was varied and beautiful. Great range of works by many famous artists from all time periods. Another bonus is it's free.

I love the surprises one finds at these small, regional, usually college-affiliated art museums. One floor of art, from ancient times to contemporary works, makes up the Mead; there is a surprise around every corner. I am a literature teacher who uses works of art in conjunction with the literary works I teach; the Mead brought to life several works... More

this place is right on the Amherst campus, small but some wonderful art displayed... in a beautiful atmosphere and only a few rooms, so not long and tiring...

This is a lovely place. The art is excellent. Itbis just the right size to take in some att but not too much which can be overwhelming. It isnfree too! Threvis a room apl encased with wood that is sombeautiful. RObert Frostbread poetry here, somit has that historic feel as well. This is worth the visit.
